The continued rise of international student enrollment at institutions of higher education in the U.S. has brought with it a heightened urgency for student affairs professionals to not only understand the challenges facing our student populations, but to also create effective academic and social support structures on our campus. Contemporary college students possess a wider range of academic skills and abilities than ever before. In order to influence student persistence, retention, and academic success, student affairs professionals need to have a greater awareness of the characteristics of academic probation students. Using a case study approach, the presenters will explain how to conduct focus groups. They will also share lessons learned from their own experience in conducting focus groups.

Fraternities and sororities commonly organize themed social functions. Unfortunately, many of these functions have themes that are racially or sexually derogatory. The belief is that these themes are “just for fun” and there isn’t any intent to harm or offend anyone. This session reviews examples of inappropriate party themes and provides suggestions on creating more inclusive and welcoming environments in fraternities and sororities.
