Municipalities Join Mitchell Center Food Rescue Maine Campaign, Joan Perkins

The Senator George J. Mitchell Center for Sustainability Solutions at the University of Maine has partnered with the city of Waterville and a coalition of three central Maine towns to advance the Food Rescue MAINE campaign aimed at ending food waste in Maine.

A S20 million grant from the National Science Foundation EPSCoR program will fund a five-year initiative that aims to revolutionize environmental monitoring, ecological understanding, and sustainability of coastal ecosystems. The University of Maine is partnering with Bigelow Laboratory for Ocean Sciences and other collaborators in education, government agencies, citizen's groups and local industry statewide.

Umaine Names Valedictorians And Salutatorian, Joe Carr

Valedictorians included Kristi Carver of Beals Island, Maine, a landscape horticulture major; Scott Cookson of Glenburn, Maine, an engineering physics major; Jill Fuller of Dixfield, Maine, a communication sciences and disorders major; and Gerti Pellumbia of Tirana, Albania, a business administration major. Rebecca Rozario of Bangor, a mathematics major, earned the title of Salutatorian.

A new view of the constant struggle going on in the Maine woods between trees, diseases and weather has emerged from several years of painstaking research by a team of University of Maine students and faculty. Working in the Big Reed forest preserve in northern Piscataquis County, one of the largest remaining stands of old growth forest in New England, researchers have described patterns of life and death over the past 200 years with an unprecedented level of sophistication and detail.
