As teachers implement the National Science Education Standards (1996) many must change the instructional methods they have used throughout their careers. This handbook will assist teachers to be facilitators in inquiry-based classrooms. The nine units of this handbook have been implemented for three years in an eighth grade classroom and have been used and modified by three different teachers to meet their own needs. It is widely known that principals spend most of their day involved in communication. However, there is less known about the characteristics of principal-staff conversations and their possible impacts on principal-staff relationships and school climate. The purpose of this study was to assess whether the new admissions model implemented by the University of Maine at Augusta (UMA) in spring 2001 improved the academic success of first-time students. In this study first-time associate degree seeking students at the Augusta campus of UMA were examined to assess the academic success for each of the 5 student cohorts (fall 1999 - fall 2003). Each cohort was segmented to separately identify those needing (1) adult education level remediation, (2) developmental remediation and (3) those not requiring remedial course work. An Examination Of The Scope And Variety Of Adventure Therapy Services Within The State Of Maine, Donald F. Lynch

This study involved an examination of the scope and variety of adventure therapy services that are currently being offered by mental health agencies within the state of Maine. A review of related literature has shown that there were a number of closely related therapeutic modalities which could be subsumed by the tam adventure therapy and an operational definition was proposed. The statistical conclusions of the study were compiled fiom the data collected by the use of a survey instrument which was designed and pilot tested before being mailed to 191 agencies and 56 responses were returned. Historically, the wilderness and outdoor recreational activities have been portrayed as a masculine domain. In spite of this, women's participation in wilderness programs has increased, illustrating what research has proven-that women reap positive mental, physical, and spiritual outcomes from participating in outdoor experiences. Research on the benefits for female participants focuses primarily on women's experiences; however, little research investigates the outcomes of girls' participation. More specifically, the literature neglects the study of how participation in outdoor wilderness programs challenges conventional notions of femininity.
