Approaching academic standards from a dialogical orientation has significant implications for the normative outcomes of curriculum. Mikhail Bakhtin recognized dialogue as composed of emotional-volitional, axiological perspectives that seek responses from other positions that can embody a space of shared exchange. Entering a discussion, conversation, or testimony with the development of relationships with academic standards as a priority changes the encounter. There was a time in United States history when the central argument for investing in public education was to ensure that voters were sufficiently informed about the issues of the day to make wise decisions: education for self-governance. According to multiple sources, voter ignorance remains a serious concern and this may be a factor in why the political system in the United States is not more responsive to the needs and preferences of the electorate. Utilizing a participant observer research model, a case study of the efficacy of a collaborative assessment methodology within a middle school social studies class was conducted. A review of existing research revealed that students' perceptions of assessment, evaluation, and accountability influence their intrinsic motivation to learn. A collaborative assessment methodology was developed to provide a means to involve the students in the decision-making processes of instruction: lesson planning, goal and objective identification, assessment, and evaluation. Changing extrinsic motivators like assessment and evaluation into intrinsic motivators was the ultimate goal of the collaborative assessment methodology. Linking Action Research To Response To Intervention (Rti): The Strategy Implementation Project, David Hoppey

This paper showcases how one teacher preparation program embedded action research within the Response to Intervention (RtI) model. This integration helped preservice teachers gain a deeper knowledge of RtI key concepts and pedagogical decision making for meeting diverse students’ needs. Examples from a course assignment are provided to demonstrate how an action research framework helped cultivate the professional knowledge and skills needed to understand and successfully implement the RtI decision-making process. A brief discussion and implications for teacher preparation programs are also shared.

Evaluation of professional conversational opportunities experienced by pre‐profession majors in Dental Hygiene indicates significant reflective development through dialogue and participation in the experienced curriculum. A case study was conducted to evaluate the impact of a Peer Coaching strategy on pre‐professional students’ dispositional and technical preparation. Utilizing an elicitation methodology, researchers identified benefits to peer focused collaborative pedagogy. The purpose of this qualitative study was to uncover whether or not collaborative work in practicum would have value for the development of quality workplace habits. Focus and institutional policy under the No Child Left Behind Act [NCLB] (U.S. Department of Education 2001) has prioritized the individualistic, market-driven agenda. The NCLB regime has gained hegemony over the political space of public education, and the value and effectiveness of the educational process has become subject to the fetishism of standardized test scores. Utilizing the political economy of the sign described by Jean Baudrillard (1981), the political economy of the NCLB regime and the development of test score fetishism is presented.
