Science In Early Childhood Education, Olivia Kocina
Science In Early Childhood Education, Olivia Kocina
Capstone Projects and Master's Theses
Science is often limited or absent in an early education classroom. It is important to give children an outlet to experience science in the classroom or through lesson plans. Having science at an early age can provide children the opportunities to build up their reasoning, to question things about the world, and later in life to feel more confident in other STEAM (science, technology, engineering, art, and math) activities or areas. To address this need, I created a 3-day program for 3 to 5 year-olds at Little Learners of Aptos School in Aptos, California.
Increasing Nutrition And Healthy Eating Among Preschoolers, Hanyssa Usi
Increasing Nutrition And Healthy Eating Among Preschoolers, Hanyssa Usi
Capstone Projects and Master's Theses
There is little nutritional education in preschools. Children are not being taught about the importance of eating nutritious foods. When children are taught about nutrition, they will create positive eating habits that could make them less susceptible to health complications. To address the lack of nutrition education, I created a three-day lesson about nutrition for preschoolers at Teddy Bear Learning Center in Monterey, California.

Absence is a normal part of childhood for kids going to school because sometimes life happens. Kids get sick, have family emergencies, the family might have to move, or lack consistent transportation to get to school. The Early Learning Program (ELP) is a non-profit organization that provides education for preschool aged children and focuses on making preschool easily accessible, primarily for low-income families. It is not uncommon for some families to take advantage of the ELP by not prioritizing taking their kids to school and getting them there on time. Now that the COVID-19 pandemic has altered the lives of …
Closing The Virtual Gap: Resources For At-Home Learning During Covid-19, Francis Nizza
Closing The Virtual Gap: Resources For At-Home Learning During Covid-19, Francis Nizza
Capstone Projects and Master's Theses
In this time of COVID-19, at-home learning has become the new normal. In some cases, parents have been thrust into the dual role of at-home worker and at-home teacher. Additionally, disparities arise when you look at education levels of parents and socioeconomic factors. The goal of this project was to identify resources that are available to families to help overcome the many challenges to at-home learning: areas like access to the internet, proper work environments and access to wellness and mental health support, to name just a few. The process was done through collaborating with Learning for Life Charter School …
Feeding Families And Our Students During Covid-19, Elyse Bryan
Feeding Families And Our Students During Covid-19, Elyse Bryan
Capstone Projects and Master's Theses
This Capstone project is focused on providing families and students with meals during a pandemic. The majority of students in California are enrolled in a free or reduced breakfast and lunch program. Due to virtual learning it has become increasingly more difficult for students to be provided with school meals. Schools give opportunities to students to pick up their lunches but this is not beneficial for students with a lack of transportation or two working parents. Food security is important to allow students to focus in school and continue developing correctly both physically and mentally. Evidence shows that the number …
Enhancing Emotional Regulation In First Graders, Clarissa Miller
Enhancing Emotional Regulation In First Graders, Clarissa Miller
Capstone Projects and Master's Theses
Emotional regulation is the ability to have control over one’s emotions; and typically develops in early childhood. Once children reach school age, they tend to be able to manage their emotions. When children are not able to regulate their emotions, they may have poorer social skills, and have challenges when learning in school. To help children further their emotional regulation skills, I have created a three-day lesson for a first grader class at Robert H. Down Elementary School in Pacific Grove, California.
Promoting Higher Education, Sandra Estrada
Promoting Higher Education, Sandra Estrada
Capstone Projects and Master's Theses
Learning For Life Charter School is an alternative school that serves at-risk students. Due to challenges these students face, it is difficult for them to graduate and pursue higher education. Higher education can provide students with many opportunities. Financial issues, low motivation, and even lack of awareness of the multiple college opportunities available contribute to students failing to attempt or complete higher education. This leads to consequences including less opportunities in the future, lower lifetime earnings, and long-term health effects. In order to support and encourage the Learning For Life Charter School students to pursue higher education, educational workshops were …
How Can Social Emotional Learning Be Improved During Distance Learning?, Morgan Horn
How Can Social Emotional Learning Be Improved During Distance Learning?, Morgan Horn
Capstone Projects and Master's Theses
Social emotional learning (SEL) is an important aspect of school that does not get enough attention. Many teachers are currently focused on academics instead of how their students are handling the stress of COVID-19 and distance learning. The focus issue addressed in this capstone project is SEL in the online classroom during COVID-19. An argument is made that distance learning causes a higher rate of mental health problems in students in all grade levels. Considerations of the issue should include the perspectives of teachers, parents, and students. The three action options that emerged from an analysis of the data included: …
Pick Me Up: Covid-19 School Lunch Meals, Viviana Figueroa
Pick Me Up: Covid-19 School Lunch Meals, Viviana Figueroa
Capstone Projects and Master's Theses
In 2020 many students had to continue their education through social distance learning from home, which resulted in many students having food insecurities. The focus of this Capstone Project is on students who do not have access to Covid-19 school lunch distributions. This is important because many students may be eating unhealthy or not eating at all, which can result in physical and mental health issues. An evidence based argument proves that there has been a decrease of the number of students receiving a school lunch meal due to Covid-19. Consideration of the issue should include the perspectives of a …

¿Qué Es Eso?“ Socio-Emotional Learning In Ell Households, Vanessa Ortiz
Capstone Projects and Master's Theses
The focus of this Capstone Project is on Social Emotional Learning (SEL) within the English Language Learner (ELL) community that immigrated from Mexico to the United States (U.S.). This project will address the importance of implementing SEL both at home and in the classroom. The goal of this capstone project is to create a better understanding of how essential social emotional learning is across environments, especially in the home and school environments. This is an important issue because a student's success may be dependent on the stability of their overall wellbeing and ability to cope with a range of feelings …
Increasing Kindness Among Kindergartners, Jenique Ruiz
Increasing Kindness Among Kindergartners, Jenique Ruiz
Capstone Projects and Master's Theses
In most elementary school curriculum, prosocial skills, such as the concept of kindness, are absent. When young children have underdeveloped prosocial skills, social relationships and academic achievement may suffer. Children need these skills to successfully interact with their peers and to achieve academic goals. To address the lack of prosocial skills in the curriculum, I have created a three-part lesson about kindness for Kindergarten students at George C. Marshall Elementary School in Seaside, California.

Hope Services is an agency that focuses on supporting the community of adults with developmental disabilities. The work there focuses on finding employment avenues for the clients. This population faces difficulty in finding employment opportunities on their own and rely on these services for these resources. Everyone deserves the right to build an income and experience working in their lives. A disability or any obstacle shouldn’t prohibit a person of this opportunity. Due to an overdue stigma towards this group, they have to constantly prove they are fit to work and be productive assets in the workforce. This leads to …
Cultivating Growth Mindset With Adolescents, Daisy D. Yang
Cultivating Growth Mindset With Adolescents, Daisy D. Yang
Capstone Projects and Master's Theses
Some teens may believe that intelligence and other traits are fixed and unchangeable. As a result of having these fixed perspectives, adolescents may not be motivated to achieve academically and may give up in the face of challenge. Instead, teens can increase their confidence levels and motivation and adopt a growth mindset for their well-being. In order to address this issue, I created a two-day lesson for highschoolers at Rio Linda High School in Sacramento, California.
Increasing Math In Preschool Curriculum, Riley Burnett
Increasing Math In Preschool Curriculum, Riley Burnett
Capstone Projects and Master's Theses
In many preschools and early childhood educational settings, mathematical skill-building is lacking in the curriculum. With a lack of math curriculum in a preschool classroom, students may not have foundational mathematical skills, may lack problem-solving skills, and may lack self-confidence in math skills. To help children develop their math skills, I designed a virtual math activity for 3 to 4-year-old preschool children attending Monterey Peninsula College Early Childhood Lab School.

The agency I interned at was a charter school in Monterey Bay. They provide education for all students including students with special educational needs. I address the problem of structure and resources within the Special Education department. They struggled with high staff turn arounds, a loose tracking system, misused resources and a lack of communication within the special education staff, teachers and administrators. In order to solve all those challenges they have now assigned jobs and duties to get work done more efficiently and have put systems and protocols in place. My capstone project was to report on the growth …

Importance Of Mental Health Awareness For Elementary School Students, Sarah Growitz
Capstone Projects and Master's Theses
There are a variety of benefits from including school-based mental health awareness programs in elementary schools. Without proper education, students will not know what mental health is and how to seek help. Through the use of a literature review, teacher interview, and surveys, this capstone examines the importance of mental health awareness for elementary school students. Mental health can impact students' lives in such a negative way. It is extremely important for children to be aware that it is okay to struggle and learn how to properly deal with their emotions. It is also especially important for schools and educators …

The Central Coast YMCA has a mission to strengthen communities through programs that develop youth and support healthy living. CHISPA housing strengthens low-income families, by providing affordable housing. Contributing factors to the low literacy levels in Monterey County are, language barriers within families, lack of parent engagement and poverty. Benefits For Integrating Physical Activity Into The Classroom, Danielle Rodriguez
Benefits For Integrating Physical Activity Into The Classroom, Danielle Rodriguez
Capstone Projects and Master's Theses
Engaging in physical activity is essential to one’s well-being, especially for a child since their body is still in the developing stages. This senior capstone research project examines the benefits of integrating physical activity in the classroom. Since there is less emphasis on being physically active, the value of physical activity decreases over time. For the time being, since sedentary lifestyles have been promoted, this put many children at a disadvantage. Not only do these lifestyles change in children’s lives, they also affect their academic performance as well. The results indicate that when students are encouraged to be more physically …
Benefits Of The Waldorf Educational Model On Students' Academic Success, Tyler J. Curry
Benefits Of The Waldorf Educational Model On Students' Academic Success, Tyler J. Curry
Capstone Projects and Master's Theses
As traditionally ran public schools have focused more on testing in the past few decades, alternative methods of education have been rising in relevance. One model of alternative education, the Waldorf method, has an emphasis on developmental stages and the arts in a way that has been shown to increase test scores and reduce behavioral problems in their students. This capstone project examines the academic benefits of the Waldorf model of education and whether their curriculum is equitable for all students in one of the schools in the Monterey Bay area.
Redefining A Highly Qualified Teacher, Sabrina Ochoa
Redefining A Highly Qualified Teacher, Sabrina Ochoa
Capstone Projects and Master's Theses
This research paper reviews the qualifications of a “Highly Qualified Teacher” as described by the No Child Left Behind Act that was published in 2001. Further research was done to determine if these qualifications were sufficient enough to qualify a teacher as “highly qualified”. A number of scholarly reviewed articles and journals were analyzed to dictate augmented qualities that should be premeditated when considering an applicant as highly qualified. Aside from additional experience and content knowledge, researchers suggest teachers should have qualities that improve their relationships with their students and their staff. Teachers' content knowledge does not necessarily mean they …
