Community Cultural Wealth Within New Latinx Destinations: Mexican American Narratives Of College Completion In Oregon, Anthony Villarreal Jan 2022

Community Cultural Wealth Within New Latinx Destinations: Mexican American Narratives Of College Completion In Oregon, Anthony Villarreal

CGU Theses & Dissertations

With dramatic population growth and redistribution, Latinx are becoming increasingly dispersed across the country, particularly in states that previously had very few Latinx residents. Considering this phenomenon, there is a need for educational research that does not attempt to operate under the same assumptions within regions where the Latinx presence is long-standing, but rather carefully examines educational outcomes and experiences within the new Latinx destination context. This study explores the college access experiences of 20 Mexican American students within Oregon through a Community Cultural Wealth framework (Yosso, 2005). Participants were recruited through a purposeful sampling approach, accompanied with snowball sampling, …

Within the framework, persistence is an endogenous variable based on actual re-enrollment into subsequent semesters.Three student samples were drawn from a large urban research university in California. Survey data collected from a first-year seminar and the National Survey of …

A Path To Visibility And Leadership: How Mentoring Relationships Impact Career Advancement In Student Affairs For Asian American Women, Erica Alcantara Aros Jan 2022

A Path To Visibility And Leadership: How Mentoring Relationships Impact Career Advancement In Student Affairs For Asian American Women, Erica Alcantara Aros

CGU Theses & Dissertations

Asian American women who choose a career in student affairs within the field of higher education are severely underrepresented in both staff positions and top officer/administrator positions compared to White women and other women of color. As the Asian American college student population continues to rise and women make up the majority of undergraduate students in the United States, institutions of higher education must address the need for student affairs staff and administrators to proportionally represent their diverse student bodies. Unfortunately, with an average of 2% of the roles of higher education administrators filled by Asian Americans, few Asian American …

Black Preschool Minds Matter: A Critical Examination Of Preschool Teacher Beliefs About Discipline, Michelle Dejohnette Jan 2022

Black Preschool Minds Matter: A Critical Examination Of Preschool Teacher Beliefs About Discipline, Michelle Dejohnette

CGU Theses & Dissertations

Preschoolers are more likely to be expelled than children in any other grade, at more than three times the rate of school-age children. Further, this phenomenon is racialized and gendered. Boys have been expelled at 4.5 times the rate of girls, and Black boys have been twice as likely to be pushed out of their preschool program than their peers (Gilliam et al., 2016). Although Black children comprise only 18.9% of the preschool population, they have been 48% of the total preschool children who received one or more out-of-school suspensions. This unequal suspension rate is one of the most important …

A Phenomenological Study Examining The Experiences And Postsecondary Transition Outcomes For Young Adults With Mild To Moderate Disabilities, Danielle Frierson

CGU Theses & Dissertations

Research shows that students with mild to moderate intellectual disabilities (MMID) transition to post-secondary educational environments and the real-world experience more barriers than their typical peers (Banks, 2014). However, limited research includes the voices of students with MMID and their parents/guardians as they describe their transition from high school to post-secondary lives. This qualitative phenomenological study examined the postsecondary transition experiences from high school into post-secondary settings of students with MMID and parents/guardians who supported students with MMID in the transition process. This study also explored the role of the Individual Transition Plan (ITP) in secondary educational settings, support and …

Expanding The Educational Enclave: A New Teacher Starting With Inclusion, Catherine Wilder Jan 2022

Expanding The Educational Enclave: A New Teacher Starting With Inclusion, Catherine Wilder

CGU Theses & Dissertations

An enclave is a group of individuals who are somehow extraordinary and divided from the whole. By this logic, a special education classroom segregated from the general population is an educational enclave. Modern research has been moving toward inclusive practices making these enclaves less isolated. This ethnographic account is of a first year education specialist entering critical skills teaching without prior experience or knowledge of the moderate to severe field. Being introduced to this particular field in the midst of a pandemic this new teacher attempted several inclusion practices previously untouched at the particular school and district. Over the course …

Implications For Educational Equity Due To Master Scheduling Decisions Made By Site Administrators, Rachel Pittman Jan 2022

Implications For Educational Equity Due To Master Scheduling Decisions Made By Site Administrators, Rachel Pittman

CGU Theses & Dissertations

It is well documented that excellent teachers are not equitably distributed among students in traditional public high schools. Research shows teacher labor market economics and the micropolitics of schooling significantly facilitate the migration of excellent teachers between districts and schools and within schools so the teachers may secure course assignments that house the most academically successful students. No study has yet addressed within-school assignment of teachers made by site administrators through the mechanism known as the Master Schedule. This dissertation examined the factors that influence teacher–course pairing decisions made by site administrators in traditional high school settings in California and …

Teacher Self-Efficacy And Mathematics Achievement Among Racial And Ethnic Minority Students: Evidence From The High School Longitudinal Study Of 2009, Eliud Partida Jan 2022

Teacher Self-Efficacy And Mathematics Achievement Among Racial And Ethnic Minority Students: Evidence From The High School Longitudinal Study Of 2009, Eliud Partida

CGU Theses & Dissertations

Current data suggests that for every 1000 U.S. high school students only about a dozen from Racial and Ethnic Minority (REM) groups will obtain a STEM degree and pursue a STEM occupation. These numbers underscore the wealth of untapped talent in our high schools and the pressing need to broaden participation among REM students in STEM. Yet, policies aimed at improving teacher quality as a vehicle for broadening participation of REM students in STEM use measures that at best, are only weakly associated with positive educational outcomes for REM students. This study contributes an ecological perspective and analysis to advance …

Examining The Smarter Balanced Assessment Consortium Exams, Scholastic Aptitude Test, And High School Grade Point Average As Predictors Of College Readiness, Carol Ann Alexander

CGU Theses & Dissertations

The lack of college readiness in the United States is a critical issue that jeopardizes our economy. The demographic inequality of the crisis, particularly for low-income as well as Black and Latinx students, emerges from systemic problems of race and class in American education and society which suppress students’ educational and economic mobility. As part of the national reform efforts, state-based standardized tests such as the Smarter Balanced Assessment Consortium (SBAC) were designed to be better aligned with K-12 Common Core standards and provide a more efficient and equitable measure of academic performance and college readiness in middle and high …

Constitutionally Confederated: Developing An Interstate Policy Diffusion Framework For K-12 Stem Education, Vinh Q. Tran Jan 2022

Constitutionally Confederated: Developing An Interstate Policy Diffusion Framework For K-12 Stem Education, Vinh Q. Tran

CGU Theses & Dissertations

American K-12 students are widely believed to have lower academic achievement in STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math) subjects than in most developed countries. However, because education is constitutionally a state matter, student performance can vary widely from jurisdiction to jurisdiction. States also have diverse education systems, so adopting education policies from the top performers without other considerations may not always improve student academic achievement. Hence, this study aimed to group states into clusters based on their similarity in education characteristics to promote more effective policy diffusion. To accomplish that, principal component analysis was applied to 26 variables (representing four …

In Their Own Words: An Exploration Of The Educational Experiences Of Black, Indigenous Girls And Gender Expansive Youth Of Color In Foster Care, Franchesca Ocasio

CGU Theses & Dissertations

Research on Black, Indigenous, and girls and gender expansive youth of color in foster care is limited. Though, existing research in education, sociology, and psychology suggests that these individuals enter foster care at higher rates than their counterparts due to interpersonal and structural violence. In the system, racialized and gendered stereotypes influence how they are perceived by educators and lead to increased discipline in schools. Given this landscape, this work seeks to understand the educational experiences of BIPOC girls and gender-expansive youth in foster care and the ways they navigate mistreatment by educators. In the tradition of Critical Race Theorists, …

The State Of Teacher Evaluations In California K-12 Public Schools During Covid-19, Irene Preciado

CGU Theses & Dissertations

Three key aspects were revealed through the literature review of teacher evaluations. First, teacher evaluations have been controversial nationwide and revised from the outset. Second, the COVID-19 pandemic added a layer of complexity. Third, research on the state of teacher evaluations was minimal, particularly for California K-12 public schools. This mixed methods non-experimental case study employed a grounded theory research approach to gain an understanding of teacher evaluations during the COVID-19 pandemic. To conduct the study, human resource administrators in public school districts serving K-12 students across all 58 counties in California were invited to participate in an online survey. …

Separate, But Not Equal: A Content Analysis Of Sexuality Education Curricula, Heather Jaffe Jan 2022

Separate, But Not Equal: A Content Analysis Of Sexuality Education Curricula, Heather Jaffe

CGU Theses & Dissertations

Comprehensive sexuality education is important to the healthy development of adolescent during the identity formation process, especially for sexual minority and gender nonconforming adolescents. For sexual minority and gender nonconforming adolescents, the identity formation process can lead to fluctuations in both sexuality and gender identity (Steensma et al., 2013). If sexual minority adolescents struggle to integrate their sexual identity, they may have greater psychological adjustment issues (Rosario et al., 2011). The inclusion of LGBTQ+ topics in the curriculum, lowers rates of bullying and creates a safer school environment. The purpose of this dissertation was to analyze the content of sexuality …

Cracking The Bamboo Ceiling: Examining The Academic And Professional Identity Development Of Asian American Women Faculty, Christine Whang Kang Jan 2022

Cracking The Bamboo Ceiling: Examining The Academic And Professional Identity Development Of Asian American Women Faculty, Christine Whang Kang

CGU Theses & Dissertations

While Asian American faculty account for almost half of all full-time professors of color in the U.S., Asian American women account for only 3.84 percent of all full-time professors. Researchers speculate that Asian American women are often motivated to choose majors and careers considered “culturally valued”; majors that are focused more on STEM areas and careers that allow flexibility for them to manage their familial responsibilities. The implied message, that Asian American women should pursue a career guided by familial needs, hinders many Asian American women aspiring to pursue advanced professional careers in academia. Since traditional career development models have …
