Obtaining Cultural Competency Skills: Perceptions From Supervisors In Higher Education, Veronica Gomez Vilchis

A program evaluation was done on the supervisor training at Central Washington University to obtain the perceptions of supervisors on cultural competency. Eighteen supervisors were interviewed. The results demonstrated supervisors’ support of incorporating cultural competency as part of their professional development. However, supervisors indicated the current supervisor training does not give them tools to interact effectively with diverse populations. Implications for including cultural competency skills for supervisors in higher education are discussed.

More and more students with Asperger’s Syndrome (AS) are being accepted into college without having the proper foundation in place to successfully graduate with a Bachelor’s degree. It was the purpose of this study to describe and to explore the factors in the development and the planning and organization of appropriate learning tasks in the field experience for the Central Washington State College Pre-Professional Students within the Ellensburg Public Schools.

The new experience for these freshmen raised the question: "What are appropriate learning tasks or competencies that these freshmen should or should not have?" Thus this study: (1) examined various learning tasks; (2) developed a rationale for appropriate competencies; and (3) developed and listed appropriate tasks in behavioral terms for these freshmen.

The present study essentially had a threefold purpose: to determine what effect the amount of education, or more specifically the year in college, has on the tolerance of white students to Negroes; what effect the strength of religious conviction has on these attitudes; and what effect the race of the experimenter has on student response.
