All ETDs from UAB
This qualitative case study examined urban teachers' perceptions and experiences of family literacy practices and partnerships in urban schools, homes, and communities during remote learning. Research shows that collaboration among schools, families, and communities can help improve overall educational outcomes and literacy development of children from linguistic and low socioeconomic backgrounds (Curry et al., 2016; Henderson & Mapp, 2002; Taylor, 1989). However, there is limited research on family literacy practices and partnerships in urban settings during remote learning. Therefore, this research explores family literacy practices and partnerships between schools, families, and communities in urban environments to help improve students' literacy …

This study addressed the impact of the Alabama Literacy Act on early childhood educators’ literacy instruction. The researcher employed an explanatory sequential mixed methods design (Quan Qual) (Creswell & Plano Clark, 2018). To address the purpose of this study, the central mixed methods question was: In what ways does the interview data reporting the influence of the Alabama Literacy Act on early childhood educators’ literacy instruction help to explain the quantitative results about the Alabama Literacy Act reported on the surveys? Mixing of the strands occurred after the quantitative data was collected. The results from the quantitative survey helped develop …

Educating those who speak languages other than English is one of the biggest conundrums in education today, and literacy acquisition is relevant as more Emergent Bilinguals (EBs) enter public schools each year. For those EBs who struggle with family disruptions and literacy, the problem is even more profound. There is a gap in the literature concerning academic outcomes due to family disruptions. The purpose of this narrative case study was to describe the life experience of a 12th-grade, Hispanic, bilingual student classified as learning disabled in elementary school who was not literate in her native language or the English language, …

The purpose of this quantitative study was to examine differences in content area teachers' general educational beliefs and their attitudes toward teaching reading in their social studies, science, and English language arts classrooms in Alabama high schools when both content area and teacher certificate levels were considered. Such a study is important because teachers work with students ill-prepared for the demands of required high school reading, upcoming college reading, or workplace literacy, in a state in which nearly 39% of its youth fail to graduate from high school. Nearly 80% of all Alabama grade 11 students read below the 50th …

During the next decade, it is estimated that 7,918 Americans will turn 60 years old every day. This increase is expected to impact future health care costs. The aging population must be knowledgeable about health care needs to self-manage chronic conditions requiring multiple medications. Nearly half of all American adults have limited literacy skills. Adults at the lowest literacy levels may misunderstand instructions from a health care professional. Confusion about health care instructions can put patients at risk for adverse drug events. The purpose of this two-phase, explanatory mixed methods study was to explore how community dwelling adults ages 60 …

Comparison Of Annie Sullivan's Teaching Strategies For Literacy And Communication To The Current Outcome Performance Indicators In Deaf-Blindness: An Exploratory Mixed-Methods Study, Wanda Diane Pevsner
All ETDs from UAB
This study explored teaching strategies for communication and literacy development in deaf-blind students by determining if there was a significant relationship between the instructional strategies practiced by Annie Sullivan in the early 1900s and the contemporary instructional strategies recommended by The National Consortium on Deaf-Blindness to teach literacy and communication to deaf-blind students. The findings of the study identified 11 Sullivan teaching strategies that were found similar to the outcome performance indicators. This study was conducted from the Summer of 2009 to the Spring of 2010. The first phase of the study was a qualitative exploration of teaching strategies for …
