Tinsel Town As Teacher: Hollywood Film In The High School Classroom, Alan Marcus, Jeremy Stoddard May 2007

Tinsel Town As Teacher: Hollywood Film In The High School Classroom, Alan Marcus, Jeremy Stoddard

School of Education Articles

In one of the most emotionally powerful scenes in the Civil War film Glory, Colonel Shaw, played by Matthew Broderick, orders a soldier under his command to be beaten for deserting the unit. The scene is reminiscent of films about slavery in which a white man with a whip inflicts bloody wounds on the back of a black man. Shaw later discovers that the soldier, played by Denzel Washington, deserted the regiment - the all black Massachusetts 54* - to search for a pair of shoes because the unit was ill equipped. Perhaps out of guilt, or sympathy, or to …

Grocery Store Politics: Leading The Rural Community College, Pamela L. Eddy Jan 2007

Grocery Store Politics: Leading The Rural Community College, Pamela L. Eddy

Articles

Rural America is characterized by decreasing populations, increasing poverty, limited economic growth, and limited access to cultural events. The context of the rural environment makes leading colleges in these locations different than in larger, more urban regions. The research reported here investigated the experience of rural community college leaders to determine more about the phenomenon of how they constructed their leadership given their rural context. Findings indicate less anonymity for rural community college leaders, a reliance on relationship building to accomplish goals, and a smaller local peer network to aid in reflecting upon the duties of the president.

This exploratory study examined how well elementary language arts teachers participating in a federal project to raise students' critical thinking abilities scored on tests of critical and creative thinking. Furthermore, it investigated the ways in which these teachers of the language arts have developed their understanding of critical thinking skills, what types of training they bring to the classroom which might enhance the teaching of critical thinking skills, and the methods by which they foster critical thinking in the classroom. Finally, this study examined the relationship among teacher scores on critical and creative thinking tests, their professional development hours, and …

What Predicts Alumni Satisfaction? The Impact Of Investment, Involvement, And Post -College Outcomes, Amy Catherine Barnes

Dissertations, Theses, and Masters Projects

The purpose of this study was to explore the effects of financial investment, involvement, and post-college outcomes on perceived alumni satisfaction. Based on a conceptual framework guided by Alexander Astin's I-E-O model, the researcher developed the "displacement model," which illustrated the possibility that one variable could displace the effect of another. This framework also aided in understanding the joint and separate effects of the independent variables of financial investment, involvement, and post-college outcomes on the dependent variable, alumni satisfaction. The analyses also explored the effect of gender and class year on the variables. The researcher surveyed alumni from the graduating …

Podcasting: A Beginner’S Guide To Technology’S Latest Trend, Liza Turner Mcaninch, Kathleen Owings Swan, Mark J. Hofer

Articles

This article provides a starting place for teachers wanting to dabble with the latest trend in technology—podcasting. The authors present a general overview of a tool that will most likely be part of the teaching vernacular, if not now, in the very near future. We offer a short tutorial on podcasting as well as perspectives on how teachers might incorporate podcasts into their curricula. We also summarize the value and limitations of podcasts, and perhaps most importantly, we include a resource guide to some of the more intriguing and useful podcasts currently available.

Camera! Action! Collaborate With Digital Moviemaking, Kathleen Owings Swan, Mark J. Hofer, Linda S. Levstik

Articles

Broadly defined, digital moviemaking integrates a variety of media (images, sound, text, video, narration) to communicate with an audience. There is near-ubiquitous access to the necessary software (MovieMaker and iMovie are bundled free with their respective operating systems) and hardware (computers with Internet access, digital cameras, etc.). This easy access, along with the open-ended nature of digital movies, presents powerful opportunities to design student-centered, inquiry-based history projects. Engaging students as digital directors can not only help them develop historical questions and select and evaluate sources relevant to those questions, but can frame (literally and figuratively) and present historical interpretations. In …

Personal Projections In Artists' Works: Implications For Branding, Judi Harris

This paper summarizes the findings of an in-depth, qualitative study of the communicative qualities of 10-year-olds’ artistic productions in several media: pen-and-paper, digital graphics created with a touch tablet and the programming language Logo. Sixty-nine per cent of viewing teachers’ statements about the children’s learning preferences, styles and personal attributes were confirmed with information shared by the children’s teachers, parents and the children themselves during interviews. There were no discernible differences in the accuracy of perceptions among works developed with different production media. Viewing teachers knew nothing about the children’s ages, genders, backgrounds, school experiences, preferences or other personal attributes. …
