A leader in the field of school counseling and school counselor education, Dr. Carol Dahir has engaged in policy development at state, national, and international levels. Through her work, she has served as an advocate for the profession and its advancement. Dr. Dahir co-developed the American School Counselor Association (ASCA) National Standards for School Counseling Programs (1997) alongside Dr. Chari Campbell, which became guiding principles for the profession. Through her work, Dr. Dahir believes strongly in the implementation of moving policy into practice, highlighting this as a major theme of her reflection on our interview. This review critiques Sandra (Sandi) Logan-McKibben and Jenna Marie Alvarez’s book: The Ultimate School Counselor’s Guide to Assessment & Data Collection, New York, NY: Springer, 168 pages, $45 (Softcover), ISBN: 9780826185532. We highlight the book’s potential for graduate student, counselor educator, and school counselor utility, and discuss potential limitations. Overall, this book helps fill a longstanding gap in the school counseling literature, providing readers clear and tangible tools and resources to augment one’s assessment and data collection efforts.

Existing literature has established the benefits of recess and physical activity for children. In response, more schools in the United States (U.S.) are implementing, or even requiring, extended recess time for students. With these policy changes, it is important to understand the impact upon students, faculty, and staff. The following study used the shared experience of three elementary schools in the southern U.S. who recently implemented extended recess. Semi-structured focus groups with administrators, teachers, paraprofessionals, and students from three elementary schools were included in this pilot study. The authors of Foundations, Research, and Assessment of Fraternities and Sororities: Retrospective and Future Considerations offer a foundational text to understand historical, current, and future considerations for FSL researchers and practitioners. As the editors demonstrated, prior monolithic and/or heterogeneous classifications of fraternities/sororities created sweeping assumptions and a “lack of precision in the research” (p. x), which does not capture the complexities of the field. Mental health is a growing concern in the United States, even more exacerbated by the recent COVID-19 pandemic. Mental health among youth and young adult populations has also received attention in recent years. However, prior research suggests a higher sense of social support among active members of the fraternity/sorority community is associated with lower depression levels. The extent to which fraternity/sorority involvement helps address mental health among members is theorized but not demonstrated in the research. Using large-scale data, this study examined mental health experiences and behaviors of the fraternity/ sorority community and compared results with unaffiliated students. Findings suggest …

Utilizing previous research focusing on the Stigma of Giftedness Paradigm (SGP), this study explains social cognitive beliefs with the help of self-efficacy among students with gifts and talents (SWGT) in Ireland and India. The study considers the concept of person-environment fit with respect to how the SWGT feel they are being seen by others and how they react to their environment, where their self-efficacy plays a role. Irish and Indian students (N = 430) were matched by age (15-17) and gender. The COVID-19 pandemic has disrupted young learners' daily routines, learning environments, and home life stability, severely impacting their well-being. Children's issues with mental health, such as anxiety, stress, and depression, significantly impact their ability and interest to achieve in school settings. Additionally, the pandemic affected parents, caregivers, and educators, which had repercussions on their children and students. The authors conducted a literature review, identifying 26 articles that reported on young children's mental health and well-being with a particular interest in the impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic and identified gifted children. Emerging Data On Sorority/Fraternity-Affiliated Student Government Presidents, Michael A. Goodman, Alexa L. Arndt
Journal of Sorority and Fraternity Life Research and Practice
Alongside sorority/fraternity governance structures, student government is another major form of campus involvement and student representation. At times, students share both student/leadership identities: as members of a sorority/fraternity and serving as a student government officer. In this study on student government presidents, descriptive statistics were used to tell the story of student government presidents who are also members of a sorority or fraternity and in comparison, to those who are not. Findings include present-day affiliation data, as well as campus contextual elements of their experience. There are subsequent recommendations for student affairs practice.

This phenomenological qualitative study explored the gender performativity of protest masculinity in a multi-institutional study of white male-identified fraternity men. The participants expressed sentiments of dispossession, postracial attitudes, and performed cultural appropriation. Participants appropriated Black culture because they considered this synonymous with their own lack of power and privilege, which they believe has been dispossessed. Implications are provided to suggest how campus-based professionals can further disrupt the (un) conscious habits of whiteness in fraternity men and forms of white supremacy through collaborative programming and campus-wide efforts.

Sorority And Fraternity Life Professionals’ Perspectives On Challenges Faced By Culturally Based Sororities And Fraternities, Antonio Duran, Crystal E. Garcia, Hannah L. Reyes
Journal of Sorority and Fraternity Life Research and Practice
Featuring the perspectives of 15 sorority and fraternity life (SFL) professionals, this qualitative study highlights the challenges culturally based sororities and fraternities face on college campuses. Guided by a framework grounded in concepts of organizational culture, findings revealed three issues that culturally based SFL organizations encounter: a predominant emphasis on historically white sororities and fraternities in SFL communities, a lack of human and financial capital, as well as inadequate advisor support and training. Implications for research and practice are offered.

Presidents of Black Greek Letter fraternities at predominantly White institutions are a rare breed who constantly live under multidimensional pressure to succeed. And their difficult dedication to fraternal, institutional, and personal expectations was only heightened when COVID-19 first closed and then reconfigured college campuses over the last year. Their experiences prove congruent around several themes - fraternal unity, community service, prioritizing family, and self-investment - that illuminate key areas for potential partnership and support of these students and the chapters they love. With simple effort understanding, caring and compassionate student affairs professionals can truly make a difference for this population.

This study explored adolescents’ perceptions and experiences with school counselling in Ibadan, Southwest Nigeria. A total of 48 students between the ages of 14 and 19 years from public and private secondary schools participated in eight focus groups. Using a phenomenological approach, data was analyzed using thematic analysis. Participants described the role of a school counsellor as an adult support system and accessed counselling services mostly for academic purposes. Negative beliefs and experiences with the counselling process and preference for significant others were some barriers to seeking school counselling services. Personal counsellor attributes which facilitate supportive interpersonal relationships were desired. …

Postsecondary readiness is critical to broadening opportunities for educational and career options beyond high school. However, Black males are often at a disadvantage to gaining access to postsecondary preparation and school counselors who can respond to their academic needs. Therefore, the purpose of this study was to explore the experiences and culturally responsive practices of school stakeholders (who are predominantly Black) from an academy of engineering (career academy). Trends And Changes In School Counselor Cacrep Standards In The United States, Patrick Akos, Kevin Duquette
Journal of School-Based Counseling Policy and Evaluation
Counseling and educational reform have been responsive to major societal change. This evolution is also reflected in counselor preparation. We examined changes in the Council for Accreditation of Counseling and Related Educational Programs (CACREP) school counselor preparation standards over four decades in the United States. Constant comparative analysis revealed substantial increases in school counselor preparation demands from 1982 to 2016. Data suggest persistent increases in the array and breadth of competency-based standards, including emergent foci (e.g., crisis response, addiction). Future considerations around school counselor identity, expectations and professional collaboration in school counselor preparation are considered.

Using data from the 2021 Multi-Institutional Study of Leadership (MSL), this article compares the effects of COVID-19 on fraternity and sorority members’ educational experiences a year after the pandemic began disaggregated by fraternity and sorority council membership and compared to unaffiliated students. Results show increases in negative effects for students in multicultural councils compared to IFC, NPC, and unaffiliated students on many measures and increased negative effects for NPC women on others.

This article focuses on adaptations organizations made as a result of COVID-19. The purpose was to determine what changes have been made, and how staff/volunteers believe those changes impacted the organization. Oliver’s (1977; 1980) expectation confirmation theory served as the theoretical framework. The researchers collected data via survey. Organizations experienced budget cuts, modified programming, and postponed chapter expansion, among others. Participants experienced an increase in virtual meetings and discussed the effectiveness of technology. Eighty-nine percent believe their relationships with undergraduate chapters remained consistent or grew stronger during the pandemic. Researchers have long been interested in individual difference variables as predictors of creativity. The focus of most studies has been on the later stages of creativity process through which creative ideas are transformed into tangible forms, but until recently a very limited empirical base existed to answer questions about why some individuals come up with creative ideas more often than others. The present study examined individual difference predictors of creative ideation among high ability undergraduate students and tested the role of well-being as a moderator in explaining these relationships. Much research has focused on how gifted children and adolescents deal with the social stigmas associated with giftedness. Previous studies indicate that several coping strategies exist, and these are related to personality and other characteristics. However, once these gifted individuals enter higher education, they are often required to shift their coping strategies to deal with stressors and situations in this new environment. Value orientations, based on Schwartz’s theory of human values, were collected from low-income, high-ability middle school students (N = 215; 87.4% Black, Hispanic, or Mixed) through a values affirmation activity in the 7th and again in the 8th grade. Students ranked “Being successful” highest in 7th grade, “Being safe and secure” highest in 8thgrade. Most important values in the Conservation and Self-Transcendent quadrants predominated and were most stable from 7th to 8th grade. "I'M Thankful Every Day I Did It": An Exploration Of Belonging For Commuter Students In Historically White Sororities And Fraternities At Primarily Commuter Public Institutions, Michael D. Giacalone

Membership in historically White sororities and fraternities (HWSF) has been connected with sense of belonging (Cohen et al., 2017; McCreary & Schutts, 2015). The experience of commuter students in sororities and fraternities, however, has been largely overlooked, including an understanding of what belonging consists of as members. This phenomenological study sought to close that gap by exploring how commuter students in HWSF experienced belonging at primarily commuter public institutions through interviews with alumni who lived that experience. Three themes emerged from the data: personal connections, feeling welcomed and accepted, and transformation of the college experience.

This study explored how Students of Color within National Pan-Hellenic Council and Multicultural Greek Council sororities and fraternities engaged in activism and in what ways this involvement connected to their membership. Using a qualitative critical narrative approach, we examined the journeys of ten participants. Findings unpack ways participants engaged in activism and resistance aimed at educating individuals and increasing awareness of societal injustices, addressing inequities through service, and inciting disruption and cultivating institutional and societal level change.
