Facing the Future Lessons

The world is at an energy tipping point. Countries and communities can choose to be proactive or wait and be reactive, however it is much less costly to do the former. In this project, high school environmental science students will examine the current energy use and concerns in a named country or community, analyze the pros and cons of the current energy situation and how it effects the social, economic and environmental aspects of the culture, then create a more sustainable, resilient plan for that country.

This curriculum will spark student interest in global and environmental issues and sustainable solutions through 20 thought-provoking articles that first appeared in the Seattle Post-Intelligencer's Newspapers in Education series Skills for Everyday Living. This 20-article series of case studies and classroom activities can be used in full or in part to study specific topics. All articles include a student activity and "take action" idea.

Fueling Our Future: Exploring Sustainable Energy Use begins by introducing students to foundational energy science. The lessons then shift to focus on personal energy use, energy sources and their impacts, and transportation fuels. The unit culminates with an energy conservation lesson that showcases young people from around the world implementing energy conservation strategies in their homes, schools, communities and beyond. This lesson can be used as a launching pad for a classroom action or service project. Facing the Future Lessons

Fueling Our Future: Exploring Sustainable Energy Use begins with lessons that introduce students to foundational energy concepts. The lessons then begin to focus more specifically on topics like energy access and transportation fuels. The unit culminates with an aviation-focused performance-based assessment that is integrated into the final three lessons.

This unit was designed to contribute to the educational mission of the Northwest Advanced Renewables Alliance to strengthen the overall scientific literacy of students with respect to biofuels. The pre and post assessment can be administered before and after this unit to measure knowledge and personal attitudes about energy consumption.

Climate change is a complex, interconnected global issue that cuts across many disciplines. This curriculum is aligned with national science and social studies standards and may be used in other classes as well. Appropriate disciplines are suggested for each lesson.

The 2-week unit begins with an introduction to climate change. During the first week, the foundation is laid for understanding some of the forces behind climate change. Students learn basic scientific phenomena related to climate change, beginning with the carbon cycle and the greenhouse effect and concluding with an analysis of different fuel types.
