Nontraditional Students Success In Compressed Courses Within A Community College Cohort, Elizabeth Kinter Tanner Oct 2018

Nontraditional Students Success In Compressed Courses Within A Community College Cohort, Elizabeth Kinter Tanner

Masters Theses & Specialist Projects

Nontraditional students are an untapped population for American higher education institutions. Private baccalaureate-granting universities have taken the lead on creating programs for this population’s needs. These programs typically include combinations of online instruction, cohorts, compressed or accelerated courses, and prior learning assessment. Similarly constructed programs for nontraditional students at public community colleges are less common. A review of the Council for Accelerated Programs’ website reveals only twelve of the 98-member institutions are community or technical colleges, and only one is in California (Council for Accelerated Programs, n.d.). In 2016, Shasta-Tehama-Trinity Joint Community College District in California created the Accelerated College …

African American students’ ability to persist in an educational system that has historically viewed them as uneducable is a testament to their persistence and resilience. The authors provide a brief historical overview of how African American students have been treated since they were first brought to what later became the United States. A social justice framework is discussed as a solid foundation for addressing current inadequacies, with emphasis on the need for school counselors to move beyond their traditional understanding of the so-called “achievement gap.” Using a contextual humanistic approach, the authors suggest micro and macro level action steps that …

Preventing Sdts: Student Debt Troubles [Brochure And Streaming Video], Christian Montgomery, Sam Mallory

Counseling Concepts and Applications for Student Affairs Professionals (CNS 577)

In 2015, average student debt for graduates is higher than ever, even as the negative effects of outstanding student loan burdens – increased anxiety, reduced economic power, and delayed adult milestones – become increasingly well-documented (“Life Delayed”, 2013; Lusardi, 2010; Sparshott, 2015). A great number of programs, practices, and tips exist to help students cut costs and reduce the need for loans, but incoming college students are inadequately informed of these due to high student-to-high school counselor ratios and limited college-sponsored advising. This video presents to incoming college freshmen multiple expense-reducing ideas that are often missed in the current student …
