Theses and Dissertations
This thesis introduces ideas for determining the Complexity of Gamifying the learning of a task/skill. We have taken three different tasks: Learning of L2 Languages (Non-mother-tongue languages), Learning about Food preparation and Learning of Physical exercises and applied our ideas to identify the complexity of gamifying them. To further supplement our idea, we have taken few existing popular gamified tasks by 3rd party companies and addressed the complexity of making them, using our ideas, and how adding new features to them, will increase the complexity. In summary, our work presented in this thesis is useful in practice for estimating a …

Introduction: While funding for research has declined since 2004, the need for rapid, innovative, and lifesaving clinical and translational research has never been greater due to the rise in chronic health conditions, which have resulted in lower life expectancy and higher rates of mortality and adverse outcomes. Finding effective diagnostic and treatment methods to address the complex challenges in individual and population health will require a team science approach, creating the need for multidisciplinary collaboration among practitioners and researchers.
To address this need, the National Institutes of Health (NIH) created the Clinical and Translational Science Awards (CTSA) program. The CTSA …
Effects Of Visualization On Algorithm Comprehension, Matthew Mulvey
Effects Of Visualization On Algorithm Comprehension, Matthew Mulvey
Theses and Dissertations
Computer science students are expected to learn and apply a variety of core algorithms which are an essential part of the field. Any one of these algorithms by itself is not necessarily extremely complex, but remembering the large variety of algorithms and the differences between them is challenging. To address this challenge, we present a novel algorithm visualization tool designed to enhance students understanding of Dijkstra’s algorithm by allowing them to discover the rules of the algorithm for themselves. It is hoped that a deeper understanding of the algorithm will help students correctly select, adapt and apply the appropriate algorithm …

Theses and Dissertations
Learning to program a computer is difficult for many. The Learning Edge Momentum hypothesis suggests that the difficulty may be due to the tightly integrated nature of programming concepts and adapting the way curriculum is offered may have a significant influence on the outcomes. We investigate applying cognitive load reducing methods to instruction of the introductory programming concepts of declaration, assignment and sequence, using a new learning environment that an instructor can adapt for a specific example or that a student can personalize for amount and modality of content provided. Our study has three learning surveys. Each learning survey has …
