The purpose of this paper is to examine how Ontario secondary school English teachers make choices about which literature to teach in their courses. This will be done in order to more deeply understand why many secondary school teachers may or may not encourage students to read contemporary, social issue texts. This paper uses a critical sociology of schooling theoretical perspective to critique the study's findings. We examine the relation between policies and practice, the issue of resources and structural barriers, and how decisions are made around literary text choices. Reaching Across Narrative Space: Re-Interpreting One Teacher’S Experience With Technology, Dragana Martinovic, Jelena Magliaro, T. Pugh

In this paper, the authors investigate one teacher’s utilization of Information and Communication Technologies (ICT) by drawing context from two of his life-stories: one that he interprets as “ruin” and the other “success.” Methodologically grounded in narrative inquiry, this paper contains excerpts from the teacher’s authentic narratives and their interpretation from the point of information systems research, known as the social process model. The findings emphasize that with the dialogic involvement of educational researchers, it is possible to reach a deeper understanding of the events that influenced the teacher’s experience with technology. Creating Inclusive Space For Aboriginal Scholars And Scholarship In The Academy: Implications For Employment Equity Policy, Roland Karen

Many Canadian universities report an under-representation of Aboriginal scholars in their professoriate. Employment equity policy seeks to redress the under-representation of marginalized groups in the Canadian workforce, including Aboriginal peoples. This article presents the findings of a case study which sought to examine, from the perspective of Aboriginal scholars, the under-representation of Aboriginal scholars in the Ontario professoriate, specifically, why Aboriginal scholars stay, or leave the academy. The study findings illustrate the need for employment equity policy to equitably promote the recruitment of Aboriginal scholars, and further, to support their retention through the valuation of Aboriginal scholarship. Drawing upon the results of a Social Science and Humanities Research Council of Canada (SSHRC) funded research study, this paper examines connections between lifelong learning, citizenship and fiction writing. Using critical and feminist theoretical perspectives, the paper explores how fiction writing can provide opportunities for adult learning and can address concerns around diversity and inclusion when exploring issues around citizenship.
