Over the years there has been an increase in the turnover of Historically Black College and University (HBCU) presidents. As the turnover rates at HBCUs continues to increase, many higher education researchers have noted that HBCUs are currently being plagued by a leadership crisis (Evans et al., 2002; Freeman & Palmer, 2020; Kimbrough, 2017). Despite heavy criticism by media and academic researchers, very few recommendations have been made in regard to combating the “leadership crisis” at HBCUs. Understanding The Transition: Principals' Perception Of Coaching And Mentoring During Their First-Year, Dionel Clinton Waters

The limited amount of literature surrounding first-year principal support has typically focused on either preparing principals to become instructional leaders or emphasizing their managerial responsibilities (Bodger, 2011). This qualitative study examines eight first-year principals' perceptions of the coaching and/or mentoring support they received during their transition into the principalship. Using the first three stages of organizational socialization (Wardlow, 2008) as an analytical framework, findings indicate that the first-year principal participants considered coaching and mentoring as two distinct approaches of leadership assistance as they transitioned into their new role. The purpose of this qualitative phenomenological study is to examine which strategies of mentoring, if any, have a positive impact on adolescent girls who engage in potentially at-risk social behaviors, which may negatively affect their self-esteem academic performance. The female students who participated in this study attend a large high school in Dallas/Fort Worth Metroplex, are between the ages of 15 and 18, and are mentored by volunteers of The TurnAround Agenda Outreach Center. The purpose of this study was to determine if participating in the mentoring program Movement Towards a Future had any effect on a student’s academic achievement and yearly attendance. By analyzing the number of credits obtained each year and the number of absences by year, a matched sample t-test was conducted to determine if there was any significant difference between the matched pairs. A total of 50 students made of the 25 matched pairs participating in the study. Students participating in Movement Towards a Future were matched with students not participating in Movement Towards a Future by the socio-economic status, …
