In Search Of The Community University Student, Laura M. Villarreal

Teaching and Learning Faculty Publications and Presentations

Around the first week of school, a young man stayed after class to speak to me, waiting until everyone left. Sam was in his late twenties, early thirties, a serious student in class with a permanent frown as he listened intently. He was worried about comments I had made concerning attendance and he explained that there might be times during the semester when he would have to be absent if his children were sick. He softly added that he was a single father of four small children. Several days later, I had the opportunity to ask him about his family …

Verbal Behavior: An Empirical Review Of Establishing Operations, Gary R. Hoerth

Theses and Dissertations - UTB/UTPA

Establishing Operations are steeped in the science Applied Behavior Analysis and verbal behavior. Their principles are utilized daily in schools, clinics and treatment centers. The purpose of this study was to review the research literature of this principle to affirm its scientific base and identify specific strategies that can be used by educators and practitioners. Results affirmed its scientific base and identified numerous strategies for immediate use. As ABA practitioners state, "These principles are thought to be of value only if in the hands of people who use them to improve the lives of others" (Carbone, 2004).

Our community university, located along the Texas-Mexico border, in cooperation with a local elementary school campus is involved in a project focused on working with elementary students and their families in relation to early literacy development. The project provides preservice teachers with a structured opportunity to work directly with Latino families. Two years of data, collected and analyzed from preservice teachers' reflections about their experiences, revealed positive benefits and concerns. Benefits include development of preservice teachers' skill and confidence in working with parents, their ability to build relationships with families, and their capacity to form partnerships for children's literacy development. …

I Want A Divorce: When The Professional Becomes Personal In Academics, Angela West Crews, Gordon A. Crews, Mark Dantzker, Reid C. Toth, Jeffrey P. Rush Mar 2006

I Want A Divorce: When The Professional Becomes Personal In Academics, Angela West Crews, Gordon A. Crews, Mark Dantzker, Reid C. Toth, Jeffrey P. Rush

Criminal Justice Faculty Publications and Presentations

Contractual relationships between faculty members and departments are like marriages and tenured relationships like marriages with children. If either party wants out, the implications can be personally and professionally devastating. While faculty quality is periodically evaluated by performance in teaching, scholarship, and service, one’s ability to develop and maintain successful personal relationships within academic environments may impact, even override, acceptable professional performance. Roundtable participants will discuss leaving institutions and being asked to leave institutions due to the personal affecting the professional, seeking other employment after an academic “divorce” ("remarriage"), professional versus personal loyalties, and other related topics.

Professional Integrity In Higher Education: Behind The Green Curtain In The Land Of Oz, Gordon A. Crews, Angela D. West

Criminal Justice Faculty Publications and Presentations

This article discusses concerns related to professional integrity in academics and to the use of collegiality as an informal criterion for employment and evaluation decisions. We question the nature of the educational enterprise and the academic environment within which both students and faculty operate. We use the AAUP Statement on Professional Ethics to guide our examination of collegiality, and the three traditional areas of faculty evaluation (teaching, scholarship, and service), as they relate to professional integrity. We discuss potential pitfalls in situations involving integrity concerns, and suggest that the use of collegiality in professional decisions is more prevalent and potentially …

U.S.S. Online Education: Navigating The High Seas Of Large Classes, Jane Lemaster

International Business and Entrepreneurship Faculty Publications and Presentations

Higher education has incorporated technology to the point of having 100% web-based degree programs composed of classes of geographically dispersed students taught by faculty from different universities that are also geographically dispersed. This kind of flexibility for learning opportunities is well on its way to being a standard option in education. But there are trade-offs and there are problems not yet solved. Increasing numbers of students create difficulties in managing interactions and challenges the quality and rigor that is possible in delivering the course. This paper presents a redesign option to manage the increasing enrollments in an online graduate level …
