With homelessness on the rise, I wanted to examine how much this population knew about common diseases within their own community. Providing this information will help not only the homeless population, but our nation as a whole to better protect ourselves from communicable diseases. Each of 10 homeless people were given a pre and post test after having information about Hepatitis and MRSA for 24 hours. The results were clear, that everyone did better on the post test. The majority of male students enter the University of Tennessee with similar ACT scores and high school grade point averages. However, they are being retained at significantly lower rates when compared to their female counterparts. The discrepancy is even more pronounced among African-American males. As a result a male student committee was established in spring 2012 identify barriers and make recommendations to the Undergraduate Student Task Force for Student Success.
