Exercises On The Nature Of Science: The Necessity Of Observation, Roland P. Stout Jan 1986

Exercises On The Nature Of Science: The Necessity Of Observation, Roland P. Stout

Iowa Science Teachers Journal

The key to understanding and explaining the physical world around us is observation. The recent study "Vegetation Communities of Ledges State Park, Boone County, Iowa" Johnson-Groh, 1985) is largely observation. On the other extreme, even the most theoretical research done with paper, pencil and computer must be compared with observations of that which it hopes to explain. The first step in doing science, or studying science, is to observe.

The Keystone Project: A Cooperative In-Service Program, Sandra K. Abell, Edward L. Pizzini, Joe R. Moore

Iowa Science Teachers Journal

Since receiving a federal grant in November 1985, 25 Keystone area educators have been working with AEA 1 consultants and University of Iowa science education specialists to expand the use of investigative activities in the science studies of Iowa students. The published results of their work, 27 units adaptable to upper elementary and junior high classes, are now available to other interested teachers. The following article by the project leaders (1) explains the workshop plan and purposes employed by the project participants, (2) describes the focus and creation of their final products, a repertoire of new science units, and (3) …

Plant Part Puzzles, Kathleen Marvin, Carl W. Bollwinkel Jan 1986

Plant Part Puzzles, Kathleen Marvin, Carl W. Bollwinkel

Iowa Science Teachers Journal

A primary level lesson based on learning to know major plant parts is included in almost every elementary science textbook series. This lesson not only teaches the names of the organs of higher plants, but also offers an experience in classification using the learning cycle (Rubba, 1984). The plant part puzzles needed for this activity can be prepared easily from materials at hand and stored for reuse.

Science Notes - Book News: Dictionary Of Word Roots & Combining Forms, Carl W. Bollwinkel

Iowa Science Teachers Journal

"What is this?" In answer to this frequently asked question, a name is usually given. Naming often terminates inquiry, but it need not if the meaning of the name is known. The meaning usually provides a bridge to inquiry into the life style of plants and animals and the function and characteristics of inanimate science objects. The Dictionary of Word Roots & Combining Forms is a concise tool for finding the interesting bits of meaning which may be derived from the names of the objects brought into the classroom.

Editor's Corner - Originality, Carl W. Bollwinkel Jan 1986

Editor's Corner - Originality, Carl W. Bollwinkel

Iowa Science Teachers Journal

The purpose of this journal is to provide an avenue for sharing ideas in the field of science education. Some old ideas which may not be widely known are certainly worth sharing. The new ideas which are worth sharing we particularly treasure - perhaps because there are so few of them. Most of the time we are doing a bit of rearranging of ideas and finding new applications. These are certainly helpful, and to share them seems a worthwhile goal.
