The Place Of The Green Leaf In The World, C. W. Lantz Apr 1932

The Place Of The Green Leaf In The World, C. W. Lantz

Science Bulletin

Why is a leaf? Ask the question of twenty-five of your friends and if five can give the correct answer I will be surprised. The green leaf is the food factory for the world. It is the plant organ that captures the energy of the sun and in the process of photosynthesis builds of carbohydrates from carbon dioxide and water and stores this energy in potential form. Later, through oxidation processes, this energy is released and does most of the work of the world. The green plant connects the inorganic world with the organic world and our energy is directly …

Concerning Cottontails, Roy L. Abbott Apr 1932

Concerning Cottontails, Roy L. Abbott

Science Bulletin

The cornfield lay above a low bluff overlooking a swamp, and for half an hour I had tracked that cottontail through a perfect maze of weeds and cornstalks. Warming with the chase, I was determined to have that particular bunny if it took me all morning. if I had not known better, I would have thought he was teasing me. Time and again, his tracks led into a bunch of grass with every indication that he was there for the day, but always they led out on the other side.

Some High Lights On Science Club Work Apr 1932

Some High Lights On Science Club Work

Science Bulletin

"The success of the club is of course more dependent upon the director than upon any other one factor. The director should take no active part during the meeting, except when it is necessary to carry the boys over what is to them an insurmountable difficulty-his frame of mind should be that of a man behind the scenes, who having set the stage stands by watching the performance, ever-ready to step into a situation and set things right. The ability to do this properly comes with practice. It does not demand exceptional ability or personality - Next to efficient leadership, …

Colloids, R. W. Getchell Apr 1932

Colloids, R. W. Getchell

Science Bulletin

The increasing importance of the chemistry of colloids is giving them a wide recognition in the general chemistry texts of college grade. In a lesser degree they are included in the high school books but the information is often so condensed as to offer little of value. The writer believes that two or three class periods near the end of the year's course should be devoted to this subject and this article will attempt to present basic fact upon which may be built a discussion of colloids for high school pupils.

Venereal Diseases, H. Earl Rath Mar 1932

Venereal Diseases, H. Earl Rath

Science Bulletin

Much has been said about what ought to be done about venereal diseases. Nearly everyone agrees that more education on the subject is needed, but that is about as far as it goes in at least ninety-nine cases out of a hundred. The result is that much erroneous information is surreptitiously passed about. Some young people have an abnormal fear of venereal disease and live in dread of acquiring it from all kinds of objects. Others, and this group is entirely too large, treat the subject entirely too lightly, and fail to respect the dangers involved.

Waves, L. Begeman Mar 1932

Waves, L. Begeman

Science Bulletin

Of all the phenomena of the physical world, none is more important than that of waves. The average individual naturally assumes that the only waves of any importance in nature are water waves. To the student of science, however, there are other waves in nature far more important than those which we see rolling over the surface of a lake or of the ocean.

The High-Powered Skunk, Roy L. Abbott Mar 1932

The High-Powered Skunk, Roy L. Abbott

Science Bulletin

I can think of no animal that is at once so provoking and repelling of attention as the common skunk. His bright little face, clean black and white fur, plume-like tail, and fat roly-poly body all invite one to take liberties with him, yet a single move towards such familiarity, and he is transformed instantly into a thing vilely incredible, paralyzing, stupefying, insufferable.

Wings, Roy L. Abbott Mar 1932

Wings, Roy L. Abbott

Science Bulletin

When 'wings' are mentioned, most people at once think of birds. But wings, and the consequent power of flight, are by no means limited to birds. Among the mammals, for example, bats have wings and are excellent flyers. In both birds and bats, the wings are merely modified front legs.
