It has been found that most at-risk students have a very low self-esteem, which contributes to the sense of failure these students feel about their academic life. This study explored the use of bibliotherapy with secondary students in an effort to raise their self-esteem to a level which would counteract the frustration these students feel as they continually find themselves in failing situations in school. The curriculum developed in this project was designed to meet the needs of primary students in the areas of self-concept, decision-making, and locus of control. It provides activities that enhance these areas in the hope of positively influencing school achievement. The related literature and research review attempts to show the interrelationships between self-concept, school achievement, decision-making, and locus of control.

This study attempted to identify causes of teacher attrition by using a survey distributed to 74 certificated teachers at Loretto Elementary School in Jacksonville, Florida. Seven possible causes of teacher attrition, identified in the review of the related literature, were worded in statement form for use in the survey. Each possible cause was stated from three different perspectives: as it applied to the individual respondent, to teachers as a whole, and to the general public. The teachers were then asked to indicate agreement or disagreement on a four-point Likert scale. Conclusions suggested that inadequate salary and physical harm were the …

This project presents a six-hour inservice component for elementary teachers dealing with the sexual abuse of children. The program focuses on the three pertinent areas of: the effects on the child; detection, reporting and intervention; and counseling strategies. The program presents content knowledge followed by exercises to build confidence. Exercises
include case studies, small and large group discussion, question and answer task sheets and small group activities. The review of related literature includes the effects of sexual abuse on the child; detection, reporting and intervention procedures; and counseling strategies.

This study was designed to determine what factors sixth grade teachers from selected sixth grade centers identified as the reasons for the variations between academic achievement, or teacher assigned grades, and standardized test scores for sixth grade students. Thirty-two teachers participated in a questionnaire survey that was specifically designed, through the use of research, for this study. The questionnaire was divided into four main categories. The categories were: Home Related Problems, Socio-economic Status, Child Related Problems, and Teacher Related Problems. The teachers ranked the factors in degrees from five to one. The Educational Effects Of And The Relationship Between Nonpromotion And The Dropout Rate, Sharon Slaughter Summers

The decision not to promote a student is a critical one; it could affect the rest of the student's academic career. It is imperative that such a decision be based on the best available research. This study reviews research that has been done on nonpromotion, dropouts, and the relationship between the two. Results from an examination of 1,024 dropouts' records show that 87.8% of dropouts had experienced nonpromotion one or more times. Recommendations for developing retention criteria and preventing dropouts are listed.

The purpose of this study was to find out if practicing primary teachers use nonverbal communication (NVC) effectively in class management. Eighty University of North Florida graduate students who had taught Kindergarten, first, second or third grade were surveyed during the Summer 1985 Term with a self-reporting questionnaire developed as part of this project. It was found that the majority of these teachers reported that they usually use NYC in their classrooms. The purpose of this study is to show that instructional methods designed for right-brained students will make a significant difference in the reading achievement scores of the students when compared with the scores of right-brained sixth grade students not receiving these instructional methods.
The subjects were sixth grade students who use the right hemisphere of the brain to a greater degree than the left hemisphere. The subjects' cerebral preference was determined by a test known as the Cerebral Preference Index (CPI). Ten students each were chosen from two sixth grade classes. One purpose of this paper was to determine the teaching strategies and opinions of parents who home-school their children in Florida and south Georgia. Another purpose was to define the typical day of the children involved, and elicit their opinions and feelings about home-schooling. A multiple choice questionnaire was designed for the parents with twenty-six items, and a nine-item questionnaire was designed for the children. A Comparative Study Of Maternal-Infant Bonding And Attachment As It Exists In Traditional Hospital Birthing Approaches And Certified Nurse-Midwifery Approaches, Cynthia A. Sauchuk

The focus of this paper is the problem of comparatively quantifying questionnaire information in terms of which approach; traditional hospital or certified nurse-midwifery, is more conducive to optimal maternal-infant bonding and attachment. Clarification of the percentage results evince that certified nurse-midwifery is 33% more conducive to optimal maternal-infant bonding and attachment than the traditional hospital approach. Research indicates that certified nurse-midwives birthing approach already promotes positive phenomenons of bonding and attachment whereas traditional hospital practices are just now incorporating maternal and family birthing plan choices to enhance maternal-infant bonding and attachment possibilities.

The purpose of this study was to develop and validate a survey that would help classroom teachers identify the attitudes toward school of fifth grade students in a classroom of approximately thirty students.
The survey was developed from a list of statements suggested by fifth grade students. This list was categorized by a panel of judges to eliminate conflicting or confusing statements. The purpose of this study was to find out if a teacher’s verbal or nonverbal behavior is more successful in redirecting a student's attention in the classroom. Three specific student behaviors were observed---daydreaming, distractive talking, and doing assignments for another class. Three twelfth \ grade English teachers in a Duval County high school gave the observer permission to visit their classrooms and observe on ten different occasions over a period of eight weeks. Observation sheets were kept and tallied on each teacher. A total for all three teachers was then tallied and analyzed according to a chi-square routine. The results …

The main thrust of this study, therefore, revolved around the "scale-up" of the Case Instructional Sequence into a classroom size application able to be implemented by instructors with little additional practice in employing this
type of instructional sequence. Specifically, the purpose of this study was to determine the effect of the Case type treatment on the performance of two successive ninth grade physical science classes at a private, college-preparatory, secondary school in northeast Florida. These groups were to be assessed using the Tobin and Capie Test of Logical Thinking, a measure which could help assess their respective Piagetian stage.

Nonverbal communication was not considered a science until 1950, after Ray Birdwhistell conducted extensive nonverbal research. Thus, the research on nonverbal communication in the classroom is still in it's pioneer stage. The purpose of this project was to increase kindergarten teachers’ awareness of nonverbal communication and its effect upon students. This pilot study emphasized four specific nonverbal behaviors: eye contact, touch, smile and proxemics. Research has found these behaviors to be true indicators of one's psychological state at the given time. It was believed that by increasing a teacher's nonverbal behaviors he could change students' immediate responses toward school.
