Application Of The Language Experience Approach For Secondary Level Students, Rosanne Arvin
UNF Graduate Theses and Dissertations
This study was conducted to determine the effectiveness of the language experience approach (LEA) for teaching reading and writing skills to functionally illiterate high school students who were identified as learning disabled. Twenty-one 9th-grade students ages fifteen to sixteen participated.
The students were divided into a control group and an experimental group. The control group was instructed through the use of a commercial reading kit, Reader's Workshop I (1974). The experimental group received instruction using the LEA which uses student written material to generate reading skill activities.
To verify effectiveness of the LEA, pre- and posttests of the Stanford Diagnostic …

An American History Curriculum For Eighth Grade Gifted Students, Donna North Parrish
UNF Graduate Theses and Dissertations
The curriculum developed in this project was designed to meet the requirements of the Clay County gifted program. It provides a comprehensive American history curriculum, discovery through the Civil War, to promote mastery of the content area, increase involvement and interest of students in learning through the reduction of irrelevant and redundant material, and encourage individual initiative for one/sown investigations.
The program consists of a series of independent studies in which the teacher is a facilitator who sets the stage and encourages students' endeavors. The study units developed for this project include objectives representing all levels in Bloom/s Taxonomy.

Literature At The Primary Level Depicting A Positive Image Of The Elderly: A Bibliography, Carolyn M. Baynham
UNF Graduate Theses and Dissertations
It is the purpose of this study to compose a bibliography of primary level books and/or stories that depict a positive image of the elderly. Various procedures were used to gather selections of reading material for primary level children which portray this image. The following were the methods used for this compilation. Numerous reference books which categorize children's books under related topics were examined. Approximately thirty-five letters were submitted to various organizations which deal with the elderly population asking for information or sources regarding this topic. Letters were also sent to thirty-five randomly selected publishing companies requesting suggested literature. Several …
Activities In World History For Artistically Talented Students, Brenda Peck Oliver
Activities In World History For Artistically Talented Students, Brenda Peck Oliver
UNF Graduate Theses and Dissertations
The unique characteristics and needs of artistically talented students were explored. World history students at the Douglas Anderson School of the Arts were used as a test group for the utilization of a variety of art forms in teaching world history. Lesson plans using art media for each unit of study in world history were constructed. Students responded to each lesson by completing an attitude survey. The conclusion was that the use of a variety of art in world history increased student interest and motivation. The increased student motivation resulted in a failure rate of approximately 5%, significantly lower than …

The Integration Of Social Studies Units And Language To Enrich The Kindergarten Curriculum, Catherine Hill Hicks
UNF Graduate Theses and Dissertations
The goals of this project have been to review the relevant literature and provide activities for integrating subject areas of social studies and language in the kindergarten classroom. Research has indicated that the primary school child has learned best when the curriculum is relevant to the child's everyday life.
Included in the curriculum are the communication skills denoted by the Duval County's Instructional Management System. These skills are integrated with the social studies units from the Kindergarten Keys curriculum. The topics for each unit have been those topics that children have had frequent exposure to in their everyday life.

Effects Of Journal Writing On Thinking Skills Of High School Geometry Students, Mary Mcmahon Linn
Effects Of Journal Writing On Thinking Skills Of High School Geometry Students, Mary Mcmahon Linn
UNF Graduate Theses and Dissertations
The purpose of the project was to determine the effects of journal writing on the thinking skills of high school geometry students. The research supports the idea that writing can enhance a student's metacognitive ability. The results show that the journals served effectively in various capacities. Each student became actively involved in his or her own learning process. Writing forced the students to synthesize information and they became aware of what they did and did not know. They recognized their individual learning style and strengths and began to take advantage of those strengths. The journals served as a diagnostic tool …
