Suicide Assessment Training In Counselor Education, Neil Rigsbee
Suicide Assessment Training In Counselor Education, Neil Rigsbee
Individual, Family, and Community Education ETDs
This dissertation examines the empirical literature regarding assessment and intervention of suicide, specifically regarding training counseling students to assess and intervene with potentially suicidal individuals. The author developed an online suicide assessment and intervention training module to train counseling students how to assess and intervene with suicidal clients. The author examined the effectiveness of the training module using an experimental randomized controlled pre-post design. Participants were assessed on their suicide intervention skills using the Suicide Intervention Response Inventory-2 (Neimeyer & Bonnelle, 1997), and suicide assessment abilities, abilities to determine level of suicide risk, and abilities to determine appropriate clinical actions …
Coordination Between Autophagy And The Heat Shock Response: Evidence From Exercise In Animals And Humans, Nathan H. Cole
Coordination Between Autophagy And The Heat Shock Response: Evidence From Exercise In Animals And Humans, Nathan H. Cole
Health, Exercise, and Sports Sciences ETDs
Proteins play a critical role in nearly every biological activity. In consequence, organismal health and homeostasis often hinges on the ability of intracellular regulatory systems to sustain the quality and function of these diverse, structurally complex macromolecules. Correct protein function depends on correct form, and during periods of destabilizing cellular stress, protein quality is managed in part by the heat shock response, which acts to support, isolate, and reform new or damaged proteins, and in part by the autophagic recycling of abnormal proteins, cytotoxic protein aggregates, and terminally damaged organelles. We conducted a pooled analysis of available research in humans …
Effects Of Eccentric Contraction Duration On Muscle Strength, Power Production, Vertical Jump And Soreness, Jonathan N. Mike
Effects Of Eccentric Contraction Duration On Muscle Strength, Power Production, Vertical Jump And Soreness, Jonathan N. Mike
Health, Exercise, and Sports Sciences ETDs
Prior research has investigated the effects of either eccentric-only training or comparing eccentric and concentric exercise on changes related to strength and power expression, but no research to date has investigated the impact of altering the duration of either the concentric or eccentric component on these parameters. Therefore, the purpose of this study was to assess the duration of eccentric (i.e. 2-second, 4-second vs. 6-second) muscle contractions and their effect on muscle strength, power production, vertical jump and soreness using a plate-loaded barbell Smith squat exercise. Thirty college-aged males (23 ± 3.5 years, 178 ± 6.8 cm, 82 ± 12 …
The Effects Of Gait Retraining In Runners With Patellofemoral Pain, Jenevieve Roper
The Effects Of Gait Retraining In Runners With Patellofemoral Pain, Jenevieve Roper
Health, Exercise, and Sports Sciences ETDs
Running popularity has increased resulting in a concomitant increase in running-related injuries. Of these injuries, patellofemoral pain (PFP) is the most commonly reported. PURPOSE: The purpose of this study is to determine whether gait retraining by modifying footstrike patterns from rearfoot strike (RFS) to forefoot strike (FFS) reduces PFP and improves associated biomechanical measures, and whether the modification results in increased risk of ankle injuries. METHODS: Sixteen subjects (n=16) received clearance to participate by a licensed physical therapist, and were randomly placed in the control (n=8) or experimental (n=8) group. Subsequently, the experimental group (EXP) performed eight gait retraining running …
A Multiple Case Examination Of Sexuality In Counselor Education: Pedagogy, Ideology, And Discourse, Megan Speciale
A Multiple Case Examination Of Sexuality In Counselor Education: Pedagogy, Ideology, And Discourse, Megan Speciale
Individual, Family, and Community Education ETDs
In this study, I explored the role and function of counselor educators' ideology in their sexuality counseling pedagogy, as demonstrated by teaching philosophy, curriculum, and teaching strategies. In line with my theoretical framework, queer feminist pedagogy, I employed qualitative multicase methodology with six counselor educators, bounded by the shared phenomena of teaching sexuality-focused counseling curricula. I performed critical discourse analysis on the dialogic and textual discourse generated from interviews and curricular document mining to identify ideologies embedded in educators' discourse. The analysis revealed the considerable influence of personal ideology on educators' sexuality counseling pedagogy, which constituted the following themes: (a) …
Reciprocal Relationships And Creative Expression In Literacy Learning: Ameliorating Disability Circumstances And Empowering Individuals, Laurel Ann Lane
Reciprocal Relationships And Creative Expression In Literacy Learning: Ameliorating Disability Circumstances And Empowering Individuals, Laurel Ann Lane
Special Education ETDs
Individuals engaged in the production of art, who are untrained, and marginalized by disability, are known as outsider or visionary artists. With them in mind I sought to better understand the relationship between art-making and meaning-making. Students with disability attributes in my classroom were motivated by arts-based activities, prompting me to include art in the content I taught. My own art-making grew out of those efforts, and in order to better understand how to implement my classroom practices, I began an autoethnographic study that evolved into phenomenology, positioning myself in the disability culture first, and then conducting an archival document …
The Racial Discourses Of Teacher Education Students In The Urban Southwest, Virginia Necochea
The Racial Discourses Of Teacher Education Students In The Urban Southwest, Virginia Necochea
Language, Literacy, and Sociocultural Studies ETDs
This study seeks to understand the racial discourses of teacher education students (TES) in the urban Southwest. This study is needed given the current post-racial or 'we're beyond race' climate in the U.S. (Bonilla-Silva, 2009). This study adds to the discussion of whether or not TES are really 'beyond race.' By critically analyzing TES' racial discourses it is hoped that a deeper understanding can be gained as to how this specific population both conforms and resists current racial discourses in the US. Because discourse reveals how people understand and represent the world, interviewing participants was a key method used in …
A Before-School Counselor Intervention That Promotes Peer Relational Skills And Influences Prosocial Behavior, Jennifer Rogers
A Before-School Counselor Intervention That Promotes Peer Relational Skills And Influences Prosocial Behavior, Jennifer Rogers
Individual, Family, and Community Education ETDs
The purpose of this dissertation was to understand the student experience and perception of change after participating in a before-school counselor intervention focused on learning prosocial behaviors and developing peer relational skills. This evaluation included both how students experienced the program and if they perceived any change in themselves after participating in the program. Qualitative methods are often used in evaluations because they tell the program's story by capturing and communicating the participant's stories (Patton, 2003, p. 2). The purpose of this type of method was to illuminate the process and outcomes of a program. The intent of qualitative findings …
Effects Of The Student Success Skill Program On Feelings Of Connectedness, Parent-Child Relationship, And Success Skill Engagement In Middle School Students, Phyllis Hannah Bowers
Effects Of The Student Success Skill Program On Feelings Of Connectedness, Parent-Child Relationship, And Success Skill Engagement In Middle School Students, Phyllis Hannah Bowers
Individual, Family, and Community Education ETDs
The author of the current study examined the effects of the Student Success Skills (SSS) program on middle school students' perceptions of connectedness, parent-child relationship, and engagement in success skills. The sample included 41 predominantly Hispanic seventh grade students from an impoverished community in the rural southwest. The author used a paired-samples t-test to determine the effects of the SSS program on connectedness, parent-child relationship, and success skill engagement. Overall, students reported significantly decreased perceptions of connectedness and success skill engagement. A rationale for the students' results reflects the context of current educational climate, sex factors, and ethnic considerations. Based …
An Institutional Ethnographic Account Of Mandatory Professional Development In New Mexico, Lanysha Adams
An Institutional Ethnographic Account Of Mandatory Professional Development In New Mexico, Lanysha Adams
Language, Literacy, and Sociocultural Studies ETDs
Current research has focused primarily on prescriptive models of professional development (PD), yet few have focused on teachers experiences of mandatory PD. Furthermore, researchers (Adams, 2014; Elmore, 2002; Hargreaves, 2011) have shown numerous points of disconnection between the prescribed policies for teacher PD and the de facto policies reflected in teachers' experiences of PD, leaving teachers' accounts of mandatory PD largely underexplored. The purpose of this study was to examine the institution of mandatory PD in New Mexico, exploring the characteristics of mandatory PD and full-time public high school teachers' perceptions of their PD experiences at one high school and …

Using Worked Examples For Training Nutrition Professionals To Diagnose Nutrition Problems And Use International Dietetics And Nutrition Terminology, Kirsten Bennett
Individual, Family, and Community Education ETDs
This study investigated two types of modular worked examples; process-oriented (PSWE) and product-oriented (PDWE), for performance, cognitive load, and efficiency for nutrition diagnosis. One hundred and four students (104) from a 200-level course in human nutrition participated in the main study. Participants studied the worked examples and completed the practice phase during one regularly scheduled class period. Two weeks later the participants completed the maintenance phase during half a regularly scheduled class period. Both the practice and maintenance phases involved making nutrition diagnoses, using the correct International Dietetics and Nutrition Terminology (IDNT) and writing a diagnostic statement for two cases. …
Pre-Service Teachers' Self-Efficacy For Teaching Mathematics, Shannon Mccampbell
Pre-Service Teachers' Self-Efficacy For Teaching Mathematics, Shannon Mccampbell
Individual, Family, and Community Education ETDs
Teachers self-efficacy beliefs start forming upon entering their teacher education programs and continue to develop throughout their first few years of teaching. They then remain relatively stable for the remainder of their teaching careers. Teachers' self-efficacy beliefs have been shown to influence teachers' job satisfaction, resilience, burnout rates, health, motivation, teaching behaviors, and students' academic achievement. It is important to understand how they form and what influences their development. The purpose of this study is to better understand the complex relationships involved during the formation PSTs' self-efficacy beliefs. The study examined the relationships between PSTs' self-efficacy beliefs for teaching and …
English Language Education (Ele) As A Mark Of Social Distinction In Taiwan: Buxibans, Ele Teachers Discourse, And Social Reproduction, Yihfang Pan
Language, Literacy, and Sociocultural Studies ETDs
The purpose of this study is to apply the lens of social reproduction theory to explore how English language educators view English language education (ELE) and to understand how the English language is used to create social distinctions between Taiwanese English language educators and others in Taiwanese society. Unlike other foreign languages, English enjoys a unique status and prestige in Taiwan because it is the preferred language for international communication. The belief in social mobility is the rationale for learning the English language. This study examines how the predominance of the English language creates internal conflicts and competition among groups. …

Using Interculturally Aware Teaching Methods (In Revisiting The Characteristics Of Effective Education), Steven K. Homer
Faculty Book Display Case
Teaching interculturally was not addressed in BEST PRACTICES FOR LEGAL EDUCATION. Legal scholars have studied how legal pedagogy both reflects the values and approaches of dominant groups within legal academia (i.e., privileged white men), and also how these approaches to teaching can alienate students — such as women, students of color, and gender and sexually diverse students, among others — who do not share all of the dominant group’s traits. However, more research is required to help law teachers fully understand the extent to which the structures of legal education affect non-dominant groups and how legal education may be changed …
