The Feasibility Of Test Translation -- English To Navajo, Annabelle R. Scoon Dec 1974

The Feasibility Of Test Translation -- English To Navajo, Annabelle R. Scoon

Language, Literacy, and Sociocultural Studies ETDs

The school beginner is expected to be able to follow the language of directions and explanations. Navajo children who enter school essentially monolingual in Navajo and shortly have to accomplish school learning tasks in English may face a double handicap if they have not yet labelled in Navajo the concepts needed in beginning English school work.

Measurement of school related concepts in Navajo was attempted by means of a translation of the Boehm Test of Basic Concepts, a test developed from analysis of early school language requirements. It was assumed that the semantic content of such basic concepts is universal, …

Teacher Education, Educational Leadership & Policy ETDs

The curriculum changes in the social studies from the expostulatory method with history and economics content, to the inductive method with an interdisciplinary approach which included all the social studies, made it difficult for those prepared in the traditional teacher education patterns to adapt to the "new social studies." It was the purpose of this study to survey the programs recommended by selected colleges of education, and to survey the programs preferred by the school districts. This study also attempted to survey any changes that had taken place in teacher preparation on the one hand, and any changes in teaching …

Variability In The Development Of A Science Concept As A Function Of Age, Sex, Academic Achievement, And Training Method., Elizabeth O. Cormack Jul 1974

Variability In The Development Of A Science Concept As A Function Of Age, Sex, Academic Achievement, And Training Method., Elizabeth O. Cormack

Special Education ETDs

This study investigated the scientific principle, that the level of still water remains horizontal regardless of container tilt, with fourth and eighth grade normal and learning disabled children. Measurements were made of the number of children in each group who knew the concept and of the ability of the "nonknowers" to learn the concept by an adjustment task. A two by two by two factorial design was used. A two-fold criterion of predictive water settings within 5° of horizontal and verbalization of the correct scientific principle was required for S's demonstration of concept knowledge. An adjustment task procedure with feedback …

Knowledge Of Idioms As An Indicator Of Acculturation, Ciria Sanchez-Baca May 1974

Knowledge Of Idioms As An Indicator Of Acculturation, Ciria Sanchez-Baca

Individual, Family, and Community Education ETDs

Minority students in the United States are presently experiencing countless educational problems in school: dropout rate is high, reading achievement is low, and repetition of grades is more frequent. Although educators are aware of cultural differences and although the process of acculturation has been investigated, there is little research on the relationship of such educational problems to acculturation. An objective method of measuring the concept of acculturation has not been established; consequently, the influence and effects of this process on a student have not been analyzed.

Teacher Education, Educational Leadership & Policy ETDs

The major problem investigated by this study was whether or not Mexican American bilingual fourth and ninth grade students represent the same language population in their English syntactic usage as do Anglo American fourth and ninth grade students in Las Vegas, New Mexico. The first hypothesis specified that the distributions of the following variables of the bilingual and monolingual groups were not significantly different in the oral and written modes: average number of words per clause; average number of clauses per T-unit; average number of words per T-unit; total "sentence-embedding" transformations and "sentence-embedding" transformations in headed nominal, non-headed nominal, adverbial, …

Identification Of Infants At Risk For Potential Developmental Problems Secondary To Stress In Their Mothers., Susanne Bradley Brown May 1974

Identification Of Infants At Risk For Potential Developmental Problems Secondary To Stress In Their Mothers., Susanne Bradley Brown

Teacher Education, Educational Leadership & Policy ETDs

One of the first tasks of mothering is the feeding of the child. It is recognized that certain mothers have difficulty carrying out this function. If the mother has extreme difficulty with this task, her child is at risk for neurologic and the subsequent educational problems.

This study looked at the amount of stress in the mother in the year preceding delivery to the rate of weight gain in her child. The hypothesis that mothers with increased stress would have the greatest difficulty feeding their infants could not be accepted. There was, however, an indication that once the total stress …
