Educational leaders have a substantial degree of control over students and generally have a tremendous influence on the decisions that they make. District administrators are already involved in comprehensive efforts to stem sexual harassment, teen violence and bullying; therefore, they may be well positioned to identify and address the problem of teen dating violence. Unfortunately, school district failure to take action is far too common, despite the statutory duty to ensure the safety of all students during school hours and at school sponsored events. School districts can be held liable for student dating violence under Title IX, under 42 U.S.C. …

Using Electronic Portfolios To Measure Growth In Leadership Standards And Dispositions, Peter J. Smith

This study analyzed the pretest and posttest data from ISLLC Standards surveys and the Administrator Disposition Index surveys to determine the growth in knowledge, skills, and dispositions of the candidates in the Masters/Endorsement program in Educational Administration and Supervision at the University of Nebraska at Omaha (n = 135). The data were collected from electronic student portfolios when the candidates first entered the program and again when they were enrolled in the end of program practicum field experience. The balance between incentives and disincentives to seek building leadership is currently shifting as the pool of qualified candidates willing to assume positions in school leadership is growing smaller (Browne-Ferrigno, 2003; Carr & Million, 2010; Sava, 1998). The combined goals of recruiting and retaining effective teachers are often difficult to realize due to fluctuating student enrollments and class-size targets, teaching-load norms or requirements, and budgetary and resource constraints. While schools and districts market and recruit bright new teachers to the field, they too, struggle to maintain enticing career development standards that would retain the most effective teachers in the district (Guirano, Santibanez, & Daley, 2006). With the high turnover in schools, student achievement suffers. Teacher attrition has grown by 50% over the past fifteen years. The national teacher turnover rate has risen to 16.8%. For the last three years, the campus has recognized that the current general education curriculum was complex, difficult to assess, and the overall goals for the curriculum were not clearly defined or understood by the faculty, staff, and students. The curriculum nor goals had not been seriously discussed in almost 20 years. In order to address those issues, teams from UNO attended the AAC& U General Education Institutes as well as conferences on General Education and Assessment. Military service men and women provide security and services both locally and globally. These services sometimes require deployment and separations of active duty military personnel away from their families. These separations and the subsequent stresses could be substantial in the lives of younger children. Not only can these students be affected emotionally, but the achievement, attendance, and attitudes of these fourth grade students in this study are compared to fourth grade nonmilitary students to evaluate the differences between the two groups. How does the fourth grade military student group measure up to their counterpart?

School leaders must be fully prepared to respond to all types of threats that occur. In order to respond to threats most appropriately the school needs to have a systematic approach that combines education, prevention, intervention, discipline, security and crisis preparedness measures. All threats must be assessed carefully and swiftly balancing the First Amendment rights of the student making the threat and the safety of the school. All threats are not equal but, all must be dealt with.

Assessing The Impact Of Twenty-First Century Rural School Consolidation, Jeanne L. Surface

The purpose of the study was to make a qualitative assessment of the impact of school consolidation on several rural Nebraska communities that have recently lost their schools. This research uses a multiple-case study design with interviews conducted in three Nebraska communities. The data from this research fell into four broad themes: social capital changes resulting from consolidation, the effect of the consolidation on the children of the community, the future of the community, and circumstances driving consolidation. Data indicates very differing views about consolidation; respondents with children in school were generally supportive of the consolidation and felt that it …

While the overall teacher shortage is worrisome for educators and administrators, the shortage of minority teachers is one of grave concern. A lack of minority educators inside our buildings is just one consequence of minority teacher shortage. There is also the critical issue of few minority teachers as role models for minority students. No significant difference in beginning ninth-grade pretest compared to ending ninth-grade posttest comparisons of American History t (17) = 0.34, p = .37 (one-tailed), d = 0.09, English t (17) = 1.40, p = .09 (one-tailed), d = 0.34, and Biology (t (17) = -1.58, p = .07 (one-tailed), d = -0.22, course grade scores were observed for students at-risk who accepted optional summer transition to high school program participation and completed the required school year long placement on a core content team. Group 1 students (n = 18) with Disruptive Behavior Disorders and co-occurring reading delimitations with measured reading comprehension scores greater than one standard deviation below the mean, pretest beginning compared to posttest ending 12-week behavioral treatment Core Behavior Occurrence measures were all observed in the direction of lower posttest mean scores and student core behavior improvement with eight of the 11 Core Behavior Occurrence measures (73%) found to be significantly different. The first pretest-posttest hypothesis was tested using the dependent t test. Null hypotheses for test score improvement over time were rejected for the end of fifth-grade pretest compared to ending sixth-grade posttest math Essential Learner Outcome scores converted to standard scores for randomly selected sixth-grade girls meeting measured test score criteria for challenge math placement ( n = 15): pretest M = 120.07, SD = 4.32; posttest M = 121.87, SD = 2.17; t (14) = 1.73, p = .05 (one-tailed), d = 0.500 and rejected for randomly selected sixth-grade girls not meeting measured test score criteria for challenge math …

A significant difference was found for youth at risk who refused the pre-eighth-grade summer academic enrichment program pretest-posttest comparisons for total reading (t (19) = 2.05, p = .05 (one-tailed), d = 0.473 but not for reading vocabulary t (19) = 1.58, p = .07 (one-tailed), d = 0.351, and reading comprehension t (19) = 1.65, p = .06 (one-tailed), d = 0.392, also where all test scores were in the direction of improvement. No posttest-posttest Analysis of Variance difference was observed for between groups reading achievement test score comparisons. A pattern of significant language test score improvement was …
