The Rediscovery Of Grounded Theory: Strategies For Qualitative Research In Adult Education, Wayne A. Babchuk
The Rediscovery Of Grounded Theory: Strategies For Qualitative Research In Adult Education, Wayne A. Babchuk
College of Education and Human Sciences: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research
Grounded theory is becoming an increasingly popular research methodology for use in adult education and other forms of educational inquiry, yet there is currently considerable disagreement among its co-founders concerning the implementation of this approach. Reflective of this ambiguity and to further confuse matters for the potential grounded theorist, educators who have used this methodology in the field often operationalize grounded theory’s procedures and practices according to their own interpretations and contextualiy-specific research needs. Moreover, these analysts often do not thoroughly document the specifics of their research, often failing to provide information concerning the methodological decisions they surely must have …

Central Auditory System Plasticity: Generalization To Novel Stimuli Following Listening Training, Kelly Tremblay, Nina Krause, Thomas D. Carrell, Therese Mcgee
Central Auditory System Plasticity: Generalization To Novel Stimuli Following Listening Training, Kelly Tremblay, Nina Krause, Thomas D. Carrell, Therese Mcgee
Department of Special Education and Communication Disorders: Faculty Publications
Behavioral perceptual abilities and neurophysiologic changes observed after listening training can generalize to other stimuli not used in the training paradigm, thereby demonstrating behavioral ‘‘transfer of learning’’ and plasticity in underlying physiologic processes. Nine normal-hearing monolingual English-speaking adults were trained to identify a prevoiced labial stop sound (one that is not used phonemically in the English language). After training, the subjects were asked to discriminate and identify a prevoiced alveolar stop. Mismatch negativity cortical evoked responses (MMN) were recorded to both labial and alveolar stimuli before and after training. Behavioral performance and MMNs also were evaluated in an age-matched control …

Twenty-Five Years Of The Shadle Fellowship, Hugh H. Genoways, Patricia W. Freeman
University of Nebraska State Museum: Mammalogy Papers
Over the past 25 years, Albert R. and Alma Shadle Fellowships have been awarded to 26 young mammalogists. Of the 26 Shadle Fellows, 20 are men and six are women. Twenty-five of the 26 Fellows remain active in science and are still members of the American Society of Mammalogists. Shadle Fellows have been selected from 15 academic institutions and 17 professors have served as academic advisors for awardees. Shadle Fellows have already made significant contributions to the American Society of Mammalogists and to their home institutions. Awardees have published an average of 3.2 scientific articles per year per Fellow since …

Nine Complementary Principles To Retain Adults In An Esol/Literacy Program, Edmund T. Hamann
Nine Complementary Principles To Retain Adults In An Esol/Literacy Program, Edmund T. Hamann
Department of Teaching, Learning, and Teacher Education: Faculty Publications
The following list of principles is my attempt to share general recommendations to teachers of ESOL and/or limited literacy adults based on my specific practice running a bilingual family literacy program and confirmed by my more recent experience as a volunteer bilingual literacy teacher at the Asociación Latinoamericana (in Atlanta). Though I believe in bilingual classroom environments, I think the principles identified here are also pertinent to monolingual ESL environments.
