Destress For Success: Improving Student Mental Health With A New Healthy Monday Program, Mary Kate Schutt
Population Health Research Brief Series
College students’ mental health is declining at alarming rates. Rates of depression and suicidal ideation among students have doubled since 2007. This causes campus counseling centers and staff to become overburdened and under resourced. This issue brief describes the launch of the DeStress for Success program, a new Healthy Monday program that provides a positive resource for students to help increase mental health and improve academic performance.

Population Health Research Brief Series
In Spring 2019, SU’s Lerner Center for Public Health Promotion surveyed over 600 SU faculty, staff, and undergraduate and graduate students to identify their goals related to health and wellness. This research brief summarizes the top ranked goals, including increasing physical activity, improving diet and nutrition, and better managing stress. There were interesting differences in goals across SU roles, sexes, and racial/ethnic groups.

Despite all efforts to control malaria, the disease remains a burden in Africa, especially in Burkina Faso. In other ongoing field studies conducted in Kenya, researchers have identified ways to improve malaria vector control strategies useful for accelerating the elimination of the disease. These studies often review two methods of fighting malaria: indoor residual spraying (IRS) using organophosphates, and genetically modified bacteria for larval source management.

Plants are sessile organisms; they cannot move like animals when the environment is not favorable. Therefore, plants need a mechanism to cope with environmental changes. For example, when a plant experiences stress, like water deficit, it will employ a certain mechanism that allows the plant to survive the next exposure (see Fig. 1), often referred to as “Epigenetic” regulation. By application, epigenetics deals with the changes of the level of the gene expression without change in the DNA sequence, by DNA methylation, histone modifications, and or small RNA regulation. There is a growing demand for research regarding solutions to skeletal problems in horses. In human medical science, various studies on the effect of vitamin K on human bones showed positive effects of vitamin K supplementation on bone health. In horses, very little information about the role of vitamin K exists. Also, since horses are fed nowadays with a huge proportion of concentrate, it is important to figure out whether this also contributes to the high prevalence of bone problems.
