'Shake This Square World And Blast Off For Kicksville:' Teaching History With Post-Wwii Prescriptive Classroom Films, Jessamyn Neuhaus
Jessamyn Neuhaus
The article discusses using social adjustment films from the late 1940s to the 1960s to teach students about U.S. history. It examines several films' themes including sexuality, manners, and drug use. Other films concerned safety, driving, and dating. The author reflects on her students' reactions to the films and analyzes humor as an educational tool. Several prescriptive classroom films are discussed, including "Marijuana," starring singer Sonny Bono, "A Date With Your Family," and "What to Do on a Date." The article also comments on viewing these mental hygiene films as reactions to social change.
Charter Schools: Are They Really The Answer?, Marquis Grant
Charter Schools: Are They Really The Answer?, Marquis Grant

Charter schools have become a leading alternative to traditional public education, where children of color have historically experienced low academic performance and dismal results on state-mandated testing. Whether these institutions are, in fact, the answer to what ails education is a matter of debate. Those who support charter schools point to the flexibility these institutions have to create more comprehensive, student-focused curricula that caters to the learning styles of the students being served. As a result, students experience more academic and personal success. Opponents argue that charter schools are nothing more than band-aids for an even bigger problem, namely the …

Ciência, Educação E Livros Didáticos Do Século Xix. Os Compêndios Das Ciências Naturais Do Colégio Pedro Ii [Science, Education And Textbooks In The Nineteenth Century. The Natural Science Compendiums Of The College Pedro Ii], Karl M. Lorenz
Karl M Lorenz

A Dynamic Information Generation Approach For He: Ig3 Characteristics, Jeffrey Barker, K. Sabry
A Dynamic Information Generation Approach For He: Ig3 Characteristics, Jeffrey Barker, K. Sabry
Jeffrey Barker
This paper proposes the integration of Information Generation 3 (IG3) principles to education systems to advance curriculum and instruction from traditional static designs to build dynamic learning communities and courses in higher education. Dynamic information should stimulate and support methodological flexibility for converging learner-centred and knowledge-centred education environments. This convergence is achieved through a complex mix of connected digital devices and pedagogical methods proven effective by any number of learning theories. Flexibility and diversity are important principles in the IG3 approach to permit the application of multiple scalable digital communication tools, teaching methods and decision-making to advance this new direction. …

Enhancing Student Engagement In A Multidisciplinary, First-Year Experience Course, Michael J. Stebleton, Murray Jensen, Gary Peter
Michael J. Stebleton
Three faculty members from three different professional disciplines outline strategies to engage first-year students in a team-taught, multidisciplinary first-year experience course. The theme of the discussed section is titled "food for thought…and action." Assignments are grounded in theories of cooperative and experiential learning. Tentative outcomes and students’ reactions are shared. Practical suggestions are included for educators who wish to implement comparable initiatives at their respective institutions.

“Theoric Transformations” And A New Classification Of Abductive Inferences, Michael H.G. Hoffmann
“Theoric Transformations” And A New Classification Of Abductive Inferences, Michael H.G. Hoffmann
Michael H.G. Hoffmann
Based on a definition of “abductive insight” and a critical discussion of G. Schurz’s (2008) distinction of eleven “patterns of abduction” that he organizes in four groups, I suggest an even more comprehensive classification that distinguishes 15 forms in an alternative structure. These forms are organized, on the one hand, with regard to what is abductively inferred—singular facts; types; laws; theoretical models; or representation systems—and, on the other, with regard to the question whether the abductive procedure is selective or creative (including a distinction between “psychologically creative,” as in school learning, or “historically creative”). Moreover, I argue that theoretical-model abduction—which …

Poetry And Pedagogy: Exploring The Opportunity For Epistemological And Affective Development Within The Classroom, Jennifer Hennessy, Carmel Hinchion, Patricia Mannix Mcnamara
Dr. Jennifer Hennessy
This paper provides a review of the priority afforded to the development of pupils’ affective and epistemic development within the contemporary poetry class. The paper reports on the findings of a research project which explored the experience of teaching and learning within the post-primary Leaving Certificate programme in Ireland. The research includes interview and questionnaire data obtained over a three year period from 2007-2010 from 80 post-primary teachers of Leaving Certificate poetry and 200 post-primary Leaving Certificate pupils. The paper highlights the malign impact of summative assessment on teachers’ pedagogical aspirations, identifying widespread professional dissonance amongst the cohort. Resultantly, empirical …
The Interface Of Neoliberal Globalization, Science Education And Indigenous African Knowledges In Africa, Edward Shizha
The Interface Of Neoliberal Globalization, Science Education And Indigenous African Knowledges In Africa, Edward Shizha
Edward Shizha
In a globalized neo-colonial world, an insidious and often debilitating crisis of knowledge construction and legitimation does not only continue to undermine the local and indigenous knowledge systems, but it also perpetuates a neo-colonial and oppressive socio-cultural science educational system that debilitates the social and cultural identity of the indigenous African student. As Schissel and Wotherspoon (2003: vii) argue, "Educational relations are critical elements of our humanity and sociability." This paper explores the homogenizing effects of globalization and the oppressive forces of neo-colonialism that continue to work together to privilege "western-based scientific knowledge" at the expense of indigenous knowledge systems. …

Two research questions and two null hypotheses guided the study. The design was descriptive involving 475 respondents selected from participants in the UNICEF assisted adult literacy and non formal education programme through disproportionate stratified random sampling technique. Data were collected using a 27 item questionnaire. Mean scores were used in answering the research questions, while t-test was used in testing the hypothesis at 0.5 level of significance. The findings indicated among others that lack of adequate …
