Students' Knowledge And Perceived Confidence In An Interdisciplinary Experiential-Learning Environment, Lee J. Florea, Adam J. Kuban, Michelle O'Malley

Experiential-learning theory suggests that students acquire knowledge through hands-on learning environments, and aspiring journalists need a setting where they can experience science — its process(es) as well as how to report empirical findings. Researchers utilized pre/post questionnaires, field-notebook evaluation, and focus-group analysis as methods to assess an interdisciplinary, experiential course that combined science and media undergraduates. Results revealed students valued procedural over fact-based knowledge. Students also indicated increased perceived confidence—even when they answered questions incorrectly.

The OpenOrbiter program aims to design and demonstrate the Open Prototype for Educational NanoSats (OPEN) framework. OPEN reduces small spacecraft development costs by making the design plans freely available to any institution that wishes to use them. OpenOrbiter will demonstrate the viability of this design via being launched into low-Earth orbit (LEO).

This poster presents the initial design work for the Operating Software for the OpenOrbiter spacecraft. Operating software efficiency is extremely important due to the limited level of communication with ground-based operators and limited onboard power production. Lakewood High School will accommodate the citizens of Lakewood by providing them with courses for credit and diplomas. Few boys in Lakewood yeshivas receive high school diplomas. While some have minimal amounts of high school credit, others have more and others have none. Girls receive diplomas, but are denied the opportunities given to regular students at our free public school for higher-level senior-year courses such as pre-calculus and government. Lakewood will allow yeshiva children to enroll in its distance education program currently in progress.

Closing the achievement gap has been elusive for most of the Abbott districts in New Jersey. In order to help close the achievement gap in all districts, the NJ Dpartment of Education will be setting up seven field-based Regional Achievement Centers (RACs) that will work with failing schools in 2013. Lakewood High School was listed as a priority school, a school that will come under the closest scrutiny. Priority schools will implement eight turnaround principles to improve student performance, devolped largely from the experience of Union City. Identity involves different facets of human self-definition and is unequivocally a vital element of individuals’ lives, especially in diverse societies. Culture and identity are intertwined. In education, culture in the curriculum plays a vital component in students’ identity formations. Supportive school environments provide socially, culturally and linguistically appropriate curricula that legitimize identity formations. Teachers and the curricula they teach are sources of identity formation. Every classroom encounter is largely dictated by the teacher’s role and the perception the teacher has of the students.

In a globalized neo-colonial world, an insidious and often debilitating crisis of knowledge construction and legitimation does not only continue to undermine the local and indigenous knowledge systems, but it also perpetuates a neo-colonial and oppressive socio-cultural science educational system that debilitates the social and cultural identity of the indigenous African student. As Schissel and Wotherspoon (2003: vii) argue, "Educational relations are critical elements of our humanity and sociability." Small Schools are schools within schools, autonomous of their district and the larger school building principal in which they reside. They are distinct from one another, focused and committed to equity. They are made up of an interdisciplinary team of teachers that share a few hundred or less students in common for instruction. Giving students an opportunity to engage in the construction industry in their home-town will integrate real-world skills into their study of mathematics and connect their lives to their schools and community, making achievment and graduation more meaningful.

The No Child Left Behind Act [NCLB] mandates testing of all high school students in reading and mathematics by school year 2005-06 and in science by school year 2007-08. Schools are required to make incremental increases in test scores in all students, including minority students, poor children, students with disabilities, and English language learners, setting one hundred percent proficiency as its goal by 2014. I decided to observe our department chair to learn how I too can properly teach my students to pass the New Jersey mandated High School Proficiency Test (HSPA). The results are a stunning documentation of how education is affected by the federal No Child Left Behind Act.
