The paper discusses the efforts of the Ministry of the Empire of Brazil to influence programs of studies in secondary schools that were subject to the exclusive authority of the provincial governments. The Court’s inability to directly affect education in the provinces during the Empire (1822-1889) can be attributed to the Additional Act, which amended the Brazilian constitution in 1834. From the founding of the College Pedro II, a model secondary institution in the Municipality of Rio de Janeiro, in 1837, to the founding of the Republic in 1889, the Imperial Court proposed a series of successful and unsuccessful measures …

O trabalho analisa a organização e a composição dos estudos do Colégio Pedro II no âmbito dos debates travado na Europa e nas Américas sobre a importância dos estudos humanísticos e científicos, durante o século XIX, em decorrência do desenvolvimento cientifico e tecnológico. Apresenta algumas reflexões sobre o ensino de Ciências no referido colégio e aponta que essa instituição seguiu a tendência verificada no ensino de países europeus, notadamente na França.

The chapter discusses science teaching in the secondary school in Brazil, with a focus on the College Pedro II. The imperial College was founded in 1837 as a model institution to be emulated by public and private secondary schools in the provinces. Os documentos correspondem a reformas educacionais efetuadas neste período. Dentre os programas da coletânea, quinze foram elaborados especificamente para o Colégio Pedro II, o no Rio de Janeiro. O trabalho apresenta os resultados de um estudo que teve como objetivo identificar os livros didáticos de Ciências utilizadas no Colégio Pedro II, entre os anos de 1838 e 1900. Na investigação, vinte e quatro autores e vinte e seis livros didáticos foram identificados.
The article presents the results of a study whose objective was to identify science textbooks used in the College Pedro II between the years 1838 and 1900. In the investigation twenty-four authors and twenty-six textbooks were identified.
