Technology And Teacher Preparation In Exemplary Institutions: 1994 To 2003, Mark J. Hofer

Mark Hofer

In a 1994 study commissioned by the Congressional Office of Technology Assessment, Mergendoller, Johnston, Rockman, & Willis (1994) examined four exemplary institutions to identify their approaches to integrating technology into teacher education. A decade later, the field would benefit from a comparison of current approaches of infusing technology into teacher education to the 1994 findings. This study examines the approaches of the first seven teacher education programs to receive the ISTE NETS Distinguished Achievement Award. Current approaches to the process are outlined, including the identification of the key factors impacting their implementation. A comparison of the 1994 and the present …

Elizabeth O'Grady

Compared with the early years and adolescence, young people in their middle years (ages 8-14 years) have received relatively little attention from policymakers other than in the space of academic achievement, where national curriculums have been developed, and a national testing regime is in place. Yet there is growing recognition that this is a critical time when young people experience rapid physical and mental development, in addition to facing a significant transition from primary to secondary school. The Australian Child Wellbeing Project (ACWP) asked young people about their lives and wellbeing during this crucial period. Wellbeing can be seen as …

This is the Phase Two report of the Australian Child Wellbeing Project (ACWP) which is a child-centred study that started with young people’s perspectives to design a major nationally representative survey of wellbeing among 8 - 14 year olds. The survey will benchmark child wellbeing in Australia and provide information that contributes to the development of effective services for young people’s healthy development. This document reports on Phase Two of the project: development of the wellbeing indicators. The development of indicators was informed by the findings of the first qualitative phase of the project, a review of literature and existing …

Fostering Preservice Teachers' "Nature Of Science" Understandings In A Physics Course, Ehsan Kattoula, Geeta Verma, Lisa Martin-Hansen Nov 2015

Fostering Preservice Teachers' "Nature Of Science" Understandings In A Physics Course, Ehsan Kattoula, Geeta Verma, Lisa Martin-Hansen

Geeta Verma

In this paper, the authors examine an algebra-based physics course designed for preservice teachers and explore how the course integrated two pedagogical strategies to bridge the gap between inquiry-learning experiences and the teachers' nature of science (NOS) understandings. The results of this research show that the explicit, reflective process allowed participants to examine their NOS understandings, which thereby fostered changes in their understanding.

Black Deaf Individuals' Reading Skills: Influence Of Asl, Culture, Family Characteristics, Reading Experience, And Education, Candace Myers, M. Diane Clark, Millicent Musyoka, Melissa Anderson, Gizelle Gilbert, Selina Agyen, Peter Hauser

Melissa L. Anderson

Previous research on the reading abilities of Deaf individuals from various cultural groups suggests that Black Deaf and Hispanic Deaf individuals lag behind their White Deaf peers. The present study compared the reading skills of Black Deaf and White Deaf individuals, investigating the influence of American Sign Language (ASL), culture, family characteristics, reading experience, and education. (The descriptor Black is used throughout the present article, as Black Deaf individuals prefer this term to African American. For purposes of parallel construction, the term White is used instead of European American.) It was found that Black Deaf study participants scored lower on …

Quality Of Implementation Of A School Mental Health Initiative And Changes Over Time In Students' Social And Emotional Competencies, Helen Askell-Williams, Katherine Dix, Michael Lawson, Phillip Slee Aug 2013

Quality Of Implementation Of A School Mental Health Initiative And Changes Over Time In Students' Social And Emotional Competencies, Helen Askell-Williams, Katherine Dix, Michael Lawson, Phillip Slee

Dr Katherine Dix

This paper reports the theoretical conceptualisation, statistical development, and application of an Implementation Index to evaluate the quality of implementation of the KidsMatter Primary school mental health initiative in Australia. Questionnaires were received from the parents and teachers of almost 5000 students, and also from KidsMatter project officers. A conceptual framework of fidelity, dosage, and delivery guided the selection of questionnaire items to create the Implementation Index, which was refined using latent class analysis. Schools' scores on the Index were classified into high, average, and low implementation categories. Profiles of high- and low-implementing schools provided insights into the characteristics of …

The Trajectory Of Change For Children And Youth In Residential Treatment, J. Noftle, Steven Cook, Alan Leschied, Jeff St. Pierre, Shannon Stewart, Andrew Johnson Jan 2011

The Trajectory Of Change For Children And Youth In Residential Treatment, J. Noftle, Steven Cook, Alan Leschied, Jeff St. Pierre, Shannon Stewart, Andrew Johnson

Andrew M. Johnson

This study examined the symptom response trajectories for 225 children and youth throughout a period of residential treatment. With the 10-item Conners' Global Index (CGI) as the primary outcome measure, assessments were completed on a bi-weekly basis during the average 4 month stay within the youth's residential treatment. Clients demonstrated an ongoing reduction of symptoms, and the severity of baseline symptoms influenced the trajectory of the symptom reduction. In addition, symptom reduction was characterized as logarithmic, particularly when controlling for the baseline severity of symptoms. Implications of these findings for administrators, practitioners, and researchers of residential treatment are discussed.

Scaling Procedures For Iccs Questionnaire Items, Wolfram Schulz, Tim Friedman Dec 2010

Scaling Procedures For Iccs Questionnaire Items, Wolfram Schulz, Tim Friedman

Dr Wolfram Schulz

This chapter describes the procedures used to scale the International Civic and Citizenship Education Study (ICCS) questionnaire data (for students, teachers, and schools) and the indices based on them. In general, it is possible to distinguish two general types of indices derived from the ICCS questionnaires: 1. Simple indices constructed through arithmetical transformation or recoding, for example, ratios between teachers and students; and 2. Scale indices derived from scaling of items, a process typically achieved by using item response modeling of dichotomous or Likert-type items. The first part of this chapter lists the simple indices that were derived from the …

Dr Wolfram Schulz

This chapter describes the development of the International Civic and Citizenship Education Study (ICCS) international questionnaires for students, teachers, schools, and national research centers. The student questionnaire was designed to measure both learning outcomes and contextual information. The teacher questionnaire was designed to gather teacher perspectives on the general school and community environment, teaching methods, and civic and citizenship education. School principals were asked to report on the school context for learning, on school characteristics, including school climate, as well as aspects of civic and citizenship education at their schools. An online questionnaire for national research coordinators (NRCs)—the national contexts …

Different Measures, Different Informants, Same Outcomes? Investigating Multiple Perspectives Of Primary School Students' Mental Health., Katherine Dix, Helen Askell-Williams, Michael Lawson Oct 2008

Different Measures, Different Informants, Same Outcomes? Investigating Multiple Perspectives Of Primary School Students' Mental Health., Katherine Dix, Helen Askell-Williams, Michael Lawson

Dr Katherine Dix

Student wellbeing is of central concern for parents and teachers and for state and national governments. Policies on wellbeing are now articulated within all educational systems in Australia. Effective enactment of policy depends in part on the suitability of judgements made about students' mental health. This paper investigates teacher and parent/caregiver assessments of students' mental health based upon data from the evaluation of the KidsMatter mental health promotion, prevention and early intervention pilot Initiative in 100 primary schools across Australia. Goodman's Strength and Difficulties Questionnaire (SDQ) was completed by parents/caregivers and teachers of almost 4900 primary school students in KidsMatter …

In addition the assessment will be accompanied by a comprehensive Background Questionnaire, which will collect participant information and indirectly measure two other …

Homogenous And High Performing Classes : The Case Of Optimal Classes, K Schwippert, Maurice Walker Dec 2002

Homogenous And High Performing Classes : The Case Of Optimal Classes, K Schwippert, Maurice Walker

Maurice Walker

Students enter schools with different levels of reading literacy and this study concentrated on the school's influence on students' subsequent development in reading literacy. The question is whether teacher and school characteristics, by themselves, have a systematic influence on the development of students' reading literacy. It has been and continues to be a goal of schools, in tandem with social policies, to compensate for student disadvantage arising form the out-of-school environment. Schools should not therefore aim to offer uniform educational opportunities to students without regard to differences in students' background and learning profiles. This article demonstrates it is classes where …

Measuring Attitude To School With A Latent Trait Model, Geoff Masters, N Hyde Dec 1983

Measuring Attitude To School With A Latent Trait Model, Geoff Masters, N Hyde

Prof Geoff Masters AO

A latent trait model for rating scales is used to ana lyze responses to an attitude-to-school questionnaire as part of an evaluation of projects operating in 10 West ern Australian schools under the Australian Priority Schools Program. The invariance of item parameter estimates over the 10 schools is examined, and varia tions in item estimates from school to school are stud ied in the light of the different projects operating in these schools. Results show how the investigation of items that do not retain their difficulties from group to group can provide valuable insight into the ways in which calibration …
