Aims and Objectives: The purpose of this study was to assess the acceptability and usability of
a standardized communication tool for nurses.
Background and Significance: Communication is key in healthcare. On a daily, if not hourly,
basis, nursing staff is inundated with new information regarding tools and resources, practice
changes and the work environment. However, there is currently no standardized messaging or
delivery method to effectively communicate new information. Even with a plethora of
communication tools such as flyers, posters, emails, unit huddles, and unit meetings there is no
means to guarantee attendance to crucial information.

In the following 2 years, extensive changes were made to address the numerous citations that resulted in this probation. In October 2013, the LCME lifted probation. In this article, we detail the challenges and solutions identified relevant to our struggle with compliance.

Through a number of comprehensive reviews, the Institute of Medicine (IOM) has recommended that healthcare organizations develop safety cultures in order to align delivery system processes with the workforce requirements to improve patient outcomes. Until health systems can provide safer care environments, patients remain at risk for suboptimal care and adverse outcomes. Health science researchers have begun to explore how safety cultures might act as an essential system feature to improve organizational outcomes.
