The purpose of this commentary is to disseminate significant content and to trigger discussion on the seven components of “A Blueprint for R.E.S.P.E.C.T. RECOGNIZING EDUCATIONAL SUCCESS, PROFESSIONAL EXCELLENCE AND COLLABORATIVE TEACHING (2012).” Teacher preparation programs in the United States are moving in the direction of a clinical model. Some reasons for doing so are to facilitate teacher leadership and respect, earn higher professional recognition, acquire higher financial compensation, and embrace more collaborative teaching. The purpose of this research inquiry focuses on how school leaders ‘make sense’ of educational reform in their local contexts. In order to do this, an exploratory qualitative case study of two schools that took part in policy reform initiatives directed at ubiquitous use of information communication and technology (ICT) in the Singapore city–state context is undertaken. Using focus group discussions (FGDs), interviews and observations this inquiry investigates and builds emerging explanations to sense-making experiences of actors in the midst of reforms. Yellowstone’s Youth Conservation Corps is a youth employment program founded on service learning concepts implemented through stewardship projects. Education is integrated into all projects through the Resource Education Curriculum (REC). To enhance the REC, in 2012-2013 a framework was created and implemented to assist in the development of 17 environmental educational (EE) lessons. Five major bodies of knowledge emerged: leadership, cultural heritage, stewardship, ecological relationships, and sustainability. These acted as a springboard for developing clear participant outcomes and a diversity of instructional strategies. A relatively uncharted territory until recently, the concept of children as innate spiritual beings has garnered significant attention among scholars over the past two decades. The more that is learned about children’s spirituality the more apparent it becomes that the Christian church in the United States generally fails to provide sufficient space for children to explore, develop, and share their spirituality. Learners are often referred to occupational therapists to assess their visual perceptual functioning. It is, therefore, imperative that the occupational therapists use the best assessment tools to obtain accurate and reliable results that lead to effective intervention which will be noticeable in the classroom functioning of these learners. Generating an estimated 32 billion US dollars annually (International Labor Organization [ILO] 2009), sex trafficking is one of the fastest-growing industries internationally and domestically. Further, children constitute approximately 25% of trafficked individuals (ILO, 2012). The Trafficking Victim’s Protection Act (TVPA; 2000) states that an individual under the age of 18 involved in any form of commercial sexual exploitation meets the criteria for sex trafficking of a minor, and the National Strategy focuses on 4 types of exploitation: (a) child pornography, (b) online enticement of children for sexual purposes, (c) commercial sexual exploitation of children, and (d) child sex tourism. Creating Sustainable Education Projects In Roatan, Honduras Through Continuous Process Improvement, Arjan Raven, Adriane B. Randolph, Shelli Heil

The investigators worked together with permanent residents of Roatán, Honduras on sustainable initiatives to help improve the island’s troubled educational programs. Our initiatives focused on increasing the number of students eligible and likely to attend a university. Using a methodology based in continuous process improvement, we developed tutoring programs, college preparation workshops, long-term plans for a local school, and solicited involvement by an island educational coalition. Lessons learned from these initiatives may be used to expand other efforts on the island and can be generalized to other programs in Central America.

Three nurse educators, who met at the American Nurses Association Nursing Care in Life, Death, and Disaster Conference, collaborated on a multimedia conferencing project to teach nursing students about disaster response. This case study examines two outcomes of this project. The project provided students in a disaster nursing course in Indiana an opportunity to meet faculty who helped establish and maintain a special needs shelter in Texas following hurricanes Katrina and Rita. It also demonstrated, through the use of technology, the ability of nurse faculty to share their expertise with colleagues and students residing in different geographical locations.

This chapter provides evidence of the positive benefits associated with adopting an international study tour as a unique and effective professional development tool. Specifically, we show how involvement in an international study tour has the potential to make a significant contribution to students' ability to lead, their understanding of how important it is to show initiative particularly in uncertain situations and to be an effective contributor to a team. We couch our conversation within Kolb's (1984) experiential learning frame and use Bloom's Taxonomy (Bloom et al., 1956) to illustrate how the study tour's learning objectives are assessed. The researchers framed this program evaluation project as an investigation of the influences on teaching practices of a teaching center program participants and non-participants. Changes in teaching practices and the motivations for these changes of fifteen randomly chosen faculty were studied. Session participants will develop and analyze brief case studies using abbreviated data sets and three of the methods that were used in the study. Through hands on analysis of data, session participants will enhance their ability to evaluate the conclusions drawn by the researchers and become familiar with useful analytical frameworks that they can use in their own research. …

Employees in small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) form part of a ‘disadvantaged’ group within the workforce that receives less access to formal training and development than employees in large firms. The manager’s decisional role is critical when considering employee access to training and development. Unfortunately, there is scant research into factors affecting managers’ decisions regarding employee access to a requested development opportunity in SMEs. There can be no more effective learning than that achieved by training systems to reduce death and injury. In such cases the imposition of a mandatory course would appear justifiable, especially where there is a history of unfortunate incidents and current rapid workforce growth. Installing learning as an imperative within a vibrant industry requires considerable negotiation between stakeholders to turn evidence into policy, industry intent, regulatory curriculum and subsequent workplace practice. This paper presents the results of a 2010 study on the effectiveness of the Construction Induction Training in Western Australia (previously known as the “Blue Card”). The findings indicate that the commercial construction sector values the development of the Construction Induction Training, are supportive of the mandatory nature of the training and believe that the training has not only increased their personal safety awareness but has contributed to a positive improvement in the safety culture on construction worksites.
