Black women in America; a contemplative qualitative study that explores how art communicates who they are, what purpose they serve, and moreover how those messages are internalized. Utilizing the cultural iceberg model (Hall, 1976) as the theoretical framework to draw connections to the process of transmitted historical and contemporary cultural messages specific to Black women bodies in art. This qualitative study attempts to understand the impact of vicarious messages in reference to Black women bodies to facilitate a deeper consideration and context of their experiences, and magnify the pervasiveness of marginalization.

In this presentation participants the results from this semester long faculty …

What is vicarious trauma? Vicarious trauma is a response to the continued exposure to secondary traumatic content (Figely, 2002). The difference between burnout or compassion fatigue is they can be addressed with time off or rest; however, vicarious trauma needs to be handled through coping skills and stress management. If not addressed, vicarious trauma can have adverse impacts to a person’s cognition, self-perception, and empathetic engagement (McCann & Pearlman, 1990). Additionally, vicarious negatively impacts job satisfaction. The results of the study found for every increase in vicarious trauma, there was a decrease in job satisfaction. Vicarious trauma thus provides a …
