Teachers And The Temporal, Pina Tarricone, Tony Fetherston

Dr Pina Tarricone

How teachers spend their time in the classroom is an area worthy of discussion and debate. What time do teachers spend on various activities including teaching practices and duties especially in classtime? What proportion of classroom time is allocated to certain activities, interactions with students, delivery of content and to the many unplanned incidences that occur in a classroom? Which activities are consistently time consuming and how much time do teachers spend on these activities? How does the time on particular tasks relate to pedagogy? Many studies have investigated student engagement and time but rarely have the above questions been …

Successful Teamwork: A Case Study, Pina Tarricone, Joseph Luca

Dr Pina Tarricone

Why are some teams successful and others unsuccessful? What criteria or attributes are needed for success? Contemporary teaching and learning practice over the past few years in higher education institutions has seen a proliferation of open-ended constructivist learning designs that incorporate collaboration. This has promoted the need for identifying essential attributes needed for successful teamwork. This study reviews the literature with a view of identifying a framework that educators can use to help promote effective teamwork in their classes. A case study is used to investigate two teams of final year multimedia students completing a project-based unit, in which teamwork …

Dr Pina Tarricone

The pedagogical underpinnings of the course are based on authentic assessment, which is used to promote motivation and interest of students in a higher education institution. Students were given the opportunity in a multimedia development course to develop real E-commerce business solutions. This is the third evolutionary development of the unit. The design of the unit now reflects contemporary pedagogy, taking into consideration the needs of students and the changing requirements …

The Taxonomy Of Metacognition, Pina Tarricone Dec 2010

The Taxonomy Of Metacognition, Pina Tarricone

Dr Pina Tarricone

Metacognition is a complex construct which is fundamental to learning. Its complex, fuzzy and multifaceted nature has often led to its colloquial application in research, resulting in studies that fail to identify its theoretical foundation or elements. In response to this, the research community continues to call for a comprehensive understanding of the construct of metacognition. This book is a response to this call for clarity. Pina Tarricone provides a theoretical study of the construct of metacognition in terms of psychological theory. The first part of the book analyses the relationship between reflection and metacognition, and the second part goes …

Demystification And Reconceptualisation Of The Intricate Web Of Metacognition, Pina Tarricone

Dr Pina Tarricone

Metacognition is an intricate construct described as obscure, fuzzy, vague and faddish (see A. L. Brown, 1987; Flavell, 1981a; K. 5. Kitchener, 1983; Wellman, 1983). lt perplexes and intrigues the academic community with its different theoretical bases and interchangeable terms. Many authors have argued that its fuzzy multifaceted nature has led to its colloquial application in research, resulting in studies that fail to identify the theoretical foundation or elements of metacognition. In response to this, the research community has called and continues to call for a comprehensive understanding of the construct of metacognition. This call presented a need for metacognition …

Dr Pina Tarricone

There is a growing emphasis in tertiary education that students should develop professional skills as part of their education.
