Outcomes Assessment In Practice: Reflections On Two Australian Implementations, Daniel Edwards, Jacob Pearce
Outcomes Assessment In Practice: Reflections On Two Australian Implementations, Daniel Edwards, Jacob Pearce
Dr Jacob Pearce
This chapter provides a critical reflection of the experiences of the authors in two different projects that have explored the assessment of learning outcomes of higher education students. Both projects were undertaken in the context of a growing higher education system and in an era of increased calls for accountability in higher education, and a ‘search’ for metrics to help monitor ‘quality’. Each project involved the development of assessments, engagement of higher education institutions and students, implementation of assessments and reporting of outcomes. While these projects both focused on measuring learning outcomes and were implemented in the same higher education …
Collaborative Assessments Of Learning Outcomes: Generating Positive Institutional Change, Jacob Pearce, Daniel Edwards
Collaborative Assessments Of Learning Outcomes: Generating Positive Institutional Change, Jacob Pearce, Daniel Edwards
Dr Jacob Pearce
Insight into the development of higher education assessment collaborations in two fields (medical education and engineering education) is presented. These collaborations aim to improve and share assessment and assessment practice in order to enhance educational outcomes of students. This model is efficient and effective, can be applied nationally or internationally, and can generate positive institutional change around the globe.

Why Law Teachers Should Teach Undergraduates, Kevin Clermont, Robert Hillman
Why Law Teachers Should Teach Undergraduates, Kevin Clermont, Robert Hillman
Kevin M. Clermont
For many years, members of the law school faculty at Cornell have taught an introduction to law course that is offered by the government department in the College of Arts and Sciences. The course has surveyed law in general, structured thematically around what law is and what law can and cannot do. Although its teachers have used law school pedagogic techniques in the undergraduate setting, they certainly have not intended the course to be a prelaw practice run. In short, the course--The Nature, Functions, and Limits of Law--is a general education course about law. Our experience leads us to believe …

Given the increasing diversity in our nation’s schools and communities, preparing school counseling students to understand and address systemic inequities are instrumental in the development of counseling skills and techniques. This session will provide counselor educators with methods to implement a uniform service-learning approach to teaching school counseling field experience seminars, while incorporating ideas for developing students’ multicultural competency and social justice awareness.

Given the consistently poor academic performances of Latino English Language Learners (ELL) students, coupled with the known academic and behavioral benefits of physical activity, we implemented a culturally sensitive physical activity-based intervention designed to develop responsibility through movement among ELL Latina 5th graders. Two UMass Boston professors and four graduate students partnered with faculty at the Dever School to deliver this strength-based intervention.

Locating Information In Text: A Focus On Children In The Elementary Grades, Bonnie Armbruster, James Armstrong

This paper reviews research related to the ability of elementary school children to carry out search tasks with informational text. The review is organized within a framework of components of the search process: Goal Formation, Text Selection, Information Extraction and Integration, and Evaluation. Research suggests that older and more proficient readers are better able than younger and less proficient readers to execute search tasks successfully and spontaneously. Other factors, such as the considerateness of text and the reader′s prior knowledge of text structure and topic, also have been shown to affect children′s ability to search informational text. Finally, the article …

Symbol Mastery And The Retention Of Dolch Spelling Words, Reesa Sorin, Patricia Carson
Reesa S Sorin
While the majority of students are verbal, conceptual thinkers, some students have a different learning style. Three Dimensional Visual Thinkers (3DVT) think “with the mental picture of concepts and ideas” (Davis; 1994). “Symbol Mastery” is a process of creating a three dimensional visual picture definition of a word or concept in clay; including how it is actually spelled. This paper is based on a study into the effect of Symbol Mastery on students’ learning and recall of common sight spelling words.

Comparing Weighted And Unweighted Grade Point Averages In Predicting College Success Of Diverse And Low-Income College Students, Russell Warne, Chanel Nagaishi, Michael Slade, Paul Hermesmeyer, Elizabeth Peck

While research has shown the statistical significance of high school grade point averages (HSGPAs) in predicting future academic outcomes, the systems with which HSGPAs are calculated vary drastically across schools. Some schools employ unweighted grades that carry the same point value regardless of the course in which they are earned; other schools use weighting systems that assign greater value to grades earned in honors courses. Due to these inconsistencies, comparison of HSGPAs from different schools is difficult or impossible. We coded 710 transcripts from undergraduate students involved in the Joint Admissions Medical Program in Texas. All grades were standardized on …

This presentation includes the results of a collaboration between library staff and IDEAL (Iowa Digital Engagement and Learning) faculty that extends a manuscript transcription crowd-sourcing project, DIY History, into the undergraduate classroom. Archives Alive!, a month-long curriculum module for freshmen Rhetoric students, uses DIY History to teach research, writing, and presentation skills through a series of digitally-engaged tasks. Students not only work with primary source materials, but become part of the collaborative effort to build and enhance them. Piloted in 2013 with two courses, the project has grown to nearly 20 classes totaling 400 students. Scalable, interdisciplinary, and open access, …
