From the mythmaking of primitive cave painters and the rigorous observations of Renaissance painters sprang the two great ways of seeing the world: science and art. Until modern times, the two were often at odds, as each felt the other was trying to stifle it and dominate the conversation. But as the left and right hemispheres of the brain represent rationality and creativity and cannot function normally without massive interconnectedness, so can science and art only give us a complete picture of our world by working together. This paper will explore various ways in which science and art have interacted.

Alternative Assessment: Effects On Students’ Perception And Achievement, Kristen Kopf, Andrew Parker

This research investigates the effect of alternative assessment on students’ perception and achievement in six, 9th grade biology classrooms. Students’ perception was determined through the use of a Likert scale questionnaire which compared confidence levels and preference for traditional verses alternative assessment. Achievement was measured according to academic grades from both types of assessment. Our findings indicate a significant student preference for multiple-choice exams as well as greater achievement in traditional assessment methods. The results suggest a further investigation of assessment practices is needed in order to more accurately describe the relationship between assessment strategies, student perception and student achievement.

Developing learning resources forms an important part of a school mathematics curriculum implementation. This chapter argues for a change in the way we do analysis for developing learning resources. An argument is forwarded for an undertstanding of the main concepts within the topic as well as a historical and didactical analysis thereof in order to make statements with respect to the teaching and learning of the topic. This study is an extension of a Master’s study, entitled Realistic Mathematics Education and the strategies grade 8 learners develop for the solution of two simultaneous linear equations.
