Literacy Learning: What Works For Young Indigenous Students??, Nola Purdie, Kate Reid, Sarah Buckley

The Longitudinal Literacy and Numeracy Study for Indigenous Students (ILLANS) tracked the growth in literacy and numeracy skills of a group of Indigenous students from 27 schools across Australia from the beginning of primary school until the end of Year 6. At the time the study was conceived, longitudinal studies on the school achievement of Indigenous students were comparatively rare. A desire to develop a broader picture of primary school experiences motivated data collection that included a range of other data from a variety of informants in addition to academic achievement data. ILLANS commenced in 2000, with the first phase …

Sharpening The Mind Through Movement: Stand-Up Desks, John R. Kilbourne

For nearly twenty years I have been teaching courses in sport studies in the typical college or university classroom setting. The classrooms usually consisted of thirty to forty chairs with attached desks organized in neat rows all facing front. There was little opportunity to alter the configuration because of the confined space, time, and the other classes that preceded and followed mine. In the fall of 2008 this all changed when I introduced table top desks and exercise stability balls as options for seats. Researching the effectiveness of the exercise ball on student attention and focus I discovered that 98% …
Tools And Techniques To Design And Deliver Effective Training To Mix Of Culturally Diverse Students, Raman K. Attri
Tools And Techniques To Design And Deliver Effective Training To Mix Of Culturally Diverse Students, Raman K. Attri

Big challenge trainers face in this in global and multi-country environment is to cater to needs and learning styles of students of different cultures, regions and societies attending same training course. Culture has long been known to impact preferred learning styles of people of that community and assessing learning styles of students from different culture has always been a mystery for the global trainers. This training package is first step to resolve that mystery systematically through appropriate training design and equally planned training delivery.

Professions, Organizations And Institutions: Tenure Systems In Colleges And Universities, Sangchan Park, Wesley D. Sine, Pamela S. Tolbert

A common strategy used by professions to support claims of workplace jurisdiction involves the institutionalization of professionally-endorsed formal structures, yet both theory and research suggest that ensuring the implementation of institutionalized structures after formal adoption can be problematic. This study investigates the influence of organizational characteristics on the implementation of one professionally-created institution in higher education organizations, tenure systems for faculty employment. Our results suggest that implementation of tenure systems is negatively affected by internal resource pressures, but positively affected by countervailing pressures from professionally-linked constituents. The results also suggest self-limiting aspects of the use of tenure systems.

In Search Of The Meaning Of Games In Life: A Journey To The Arctic Of Norway, John Kilbourne
John R. Kilbourne
Throughout history the games we have played have been a testament about who we were, and are. From early Inuit bone and hunting games, to the gladiator contests of Ancient Rome, to the modern American game of baseball, the games we play have served as a statement of and a rehearsal for the life-world of that period and place. By reconnecting with and understanding the games of our past, we can build meaningful bridges between our past and present, and hopefully gain a better understanding of the meaning and importance of the modern games we play. The aforesaid are timely …
Catapulting The Walls Of Higher Education, John R. Kilbourne
Catapulting The Walls Of Higher Education, John R. Kilbourne
John R. Kilbourne
As we move further into the twenty-first century administrators and faculty members of colleges and universities must rethink their approach to valuing and sharing the research and scholarship that is created at their respective institutions. The fences and walls must not only be catapulted over, they must be removed. The fences and walls can be removed by valuing research and scholarship when it is presented via the popular press and, by teaching faculty members the steps they can take to move their research and scholarship to a wider audience. Our collective well-being can only be enhanced by such movement.

US schools have long struggled with what has recently been identified as the “achievement gap.” While the debate ensues in regards to an explicit definition for this phenomenon, research overwhelmingly demonstrates that students of marginalized populations remain on the lower end of most measures of school success. Accordingly, advocates of social justice point to the disparities of resources, including quality teachers, experienced by students in poverty. As a part of this movement, access to appropriate technological resources in schools has become an issue, commonly labeled the “digital divide.” This study reviews evidence of teaching for social justice and impacting the …
