In this paper I will discuss how I applied my understanding of certain concepts of Community Language Learning to a writing class and specifically to the teaching of the critical essay. In Part One I will describe what we did in the class; in Part Two I will discuss the concepts of Community Language Learning that I was trying to apply in the class and how I was doing so; in the conclusion I will discuss how I see those concepts as being applicable to any class, regardless of the subject matter being taught.

A primary goal for education is the development of learners who know how to learn actively, resourcefully, and responsibly in the changing and complex environment in which they find themselves. Based on my own experiences as a learner and an educator , and most specifically on my experience as Academic Director of two College Semester Abroad groups to Ireland, I have formed five priorities for myself as a facilitator of such learning. Community and the Second Language Learner is an exploration of the concept of community, and its necessary elements, in relation to language, language learning and English language program design. After establishing a theoretical framework of community and its elements the project examines the reality of an existing English language program whose philosophy and goals are closely related to the concepts and elements of community. The project concludes with a discussion of the important factors in language program design in light of the examination of community.
