Abstract:
Service-learning is a rich context for developing reflection skills, promoting learning and personal/professional development. This service-learning project required students to partner with a professional who serves clients in a group setting and plan one group meeting/session. This poster describes reflection assignments and completed projects, and highlights learning promoted through reflection.

National Chemistry Week In The Greater Lafayette Area: Chemistry Is Out Of This World!, Daniela Mesa Sanchez, Jessica Callus, Daisy Unsihuay

National Chemistry Week (NCW), an outreach program initiated by the American Chemical Society (ACS), encourages scientists to bring their love of chemistry to the community. The Plutonium Chapter (Purdue University) of Iota Sigma Pi (ISP) organizes an annual celebration of this event in which over 1600 elementary school students are exposed to hands-on experiments related to the annual theme. In 2018, the theme was “Chemistry is Out of This World,” which allowed nearly a 100 volunteers to explore several space-themed experiments with children from three different school districts all over the Greater Lafayette area. Young people face emotional issues such as low self-esteem, depression and anxiety that are a source of great stress. Researches (Grossman, et al., 2004; Deckro, et al., 2010) showed that mind-body practices such as stretch, breathing exercise, and meditation, are many of the effective tools to reduce stress and maintain the physical and mental wellbeing. This presentation is a report on an ELL teacher’s mainstream class observations, co-teaching experiences with a local language arts teacher, and surveying with students for a semester. As Short and Echevarria (2016) state, “academic language is a second language for all students” (p. 2) and every student is an academic English learner. This study examines how teachers find the gap between theory and practice by taking on multiple roles in classrooms and providing diverse support (Gottlieb, 2015). EPICS is a service-learning design program in which teams of students partner with local and global community organizations to address human, community, and environmental needs. EPICS is an academic program in which teams of Purdue students partner with local not-for-profit community organizations to provide technology solutions. Team Ecuador is a division of the non-profit EPICS program at Purdue University. Since 2012 Team Ecuador has been partnered with FEVI, a non-governmental organization, to develop education infrastructure in Lumbisi. "Cultivating Leaders of Indiana" was developed to establish connections between the Purdue student body and the Frankfort community. By engaging high school students in workshops that focused on local, national, and global identities, the goal of the project was to encourage students to appreciate their individuality and to motivate them to translate their skills into a global perspective.Moreover, workshops centering on themes such as culture, citizenship, media, and education were designed to empower our project participants to embrace their sense of social value and responsibility not only in their immediate communities but also globally.

This project of Pax Populi was presented to the students in the Honors course called Beyond Afghanistan taught by Dr. Brite as an opportunity to do service learning. The goal of Pax Populi as taken from their mission statement is to “put the tools of peacemaking into the hands of ordinary people through initiatives that advance peace through education and economic development within a framework of human rights.”

The 4-H NFPA Fluid Power Challenge partnered Purdue Polytechnic Institute and Indiana 4-H with the National Fluid Power Association and Center for Compact and Efficient Fluid Power to provide teams of Indiana youth in 6-8th grades with opportunity to learn about hydraulics, engineering design, and other STEM skills. This created an opportunity to give youth a learning experience with STEM through hands-on, experiential learning activities. Youth experienced a one day workshop in which they worked as teams to learn concepts of fluid power through hands-on learning.
