In the US, recent efforts have focused on professionalizing the field of early childhood. One way to indicate professionalism is through the terms used to describe both the field and the workers. However, few have examined how practitioners or researchers describe early childhood professionals’ work. Using multiple data sources and analytic strategies, we examined the ways that those working with young children described their role and setting, as well as how these were described in research and practitioner journals. “Teacher” was the preferred term for both journals and professionals, and terms for setting reflected traditional K-12 school structures. Knowing what to do next in one’s career is often really hard. We will review some career development concepts such as developing a purpose, discussing tips for those with a less-than-supportive boss, and thinking about what to do next. We’ll work through example personas to help generate ideas and get started on planning development via a worksheet and some small group discussion.

This program shares a theoretical and practical approach to career counseling with adults with acquired disabilities. Practitioners must possess a working knowledge of the adjustment to disability process as it relates to the client's career transition. Participants will learn how career interventions can facilitate the client's adjustment to their disability.

This article explores the career paths of women faculty in Higher Education Administration graduate programs based on the results of a qualitative study of 18 faculty members at 14 different institutions. The majority of faculty members made their career choice during their undergraduate program, however, most participants in this study made their decision to follow a faculty career after entering a doctoral program or after completing their doctoral degree. Student affairs professionals have a responsibility for the professional development of graduate assistants (GAs) in the department as these positions are marketed as first professional positions. While prior literature has addressed the transition of graduate students into graduate school, there is little about the transition process for students with graduate assistantships in student affairs. Student transitions are important as they may set the tone for their first professional experience and ongoing professional development. Four key themes emerged from the voices of the graduate student participants in this study as they described their transition process into a GA position. First, they …
