Oru Faculty Ethos & History - Spirit-Empowered Life - Faith & Learning, Bill Buker, Daniel D. Isgrigg, Wiliam Ranahan
Oru Faculty Ethos & History - Spirit-Empowered Life - Faith & Learning, Bill Buker, Daniel D. Isgrigg, Wiliam Ranahan
Professional Development Resources
New faculty are introduced to being Spirit-Empowered. What does Spirit-Empowered mean, and why is it important, as a University, faculty member, and educator? Dr. Ranahan (Chair of Biology and Chemistry Dept.) begins with modeling how he integrates faith into a short lecture on sound, light, and neural paths. Dr. Isgrigg (Director of the Holy Spirit Research Center) lectures on how ORU as an institution has progressed since its inception through church history as a Spirit-Empowered university. Dr. Buker (Chair of the Seminary) lectures about how we as disciples of Jesus Christ can abide in Him and experience His fruitfulness in …
Q&A: A Career In Christian Higher Education: An Interview, Linda Gray
Q&A: A Career In Christian Higher Education: An Interview, Linda Gray
Journal of the Scholarship of Teaching and Learning for Christians in Higher Education
Much has changed in U.S. culture since the 1970s, requiring teachers to adjust their methods of reaching students who are markedly different from their parents’ generation. But through the decades, Christian educators have tried to demonstrate God’s love through caring, patience, knowledge, and commitment, and in a Christian institution, they also seek to bring a Christian worldview to their students. But if some students at Christian universities are not believers nor seekers and when students lack basic biblical knowledge, teachers in Christian institutions must adjust their teaching methods. Online teaching creates even more challenges as students and teachers can see …
Classroom Motivational Climate In Online And Face-To-Face Undergraduate Courses: The Interplay Of Gender And Course Format, Yan Yang, Yoon-Jung Cho, Angela Watson
Classroom Motivational Climate In Online And Face-To-Face Undergraduate Courses: The Interplay Of Gender And Course Format, Yan Yang, Yoon-Jung Cho, Angela Watson
College of Science and Engineering Faculty Research and Scholarship
In this study, the role of gender and course format in college students’ perceptions of classroom motivational climate (i.e., sense of classroom community and perceived classroom goal structure) was examined. Participants were 722 college students from a variety of majors at a comprehensive Midwest American university. Female students felt a stronger sense of community and perceived lower levels of performance-approach goal structure in online classes than their male counterparts experienced. Male students perceived the face-to-face classes as being more communal and less performance-approach oriented than the females did. Further, both male and female students perceived a stronger mastery-approach classroom goal …

Chemistry In Second Life, Andrew Lang, Jean-Claude Bradley
College of Science and Engineering Faculty Research and Scholarship
This review will focus on the current level on chemistry research, education, and visualization possible within the multi-user virtual environment of Second Life. We discuss how Second Life has been used as a platform for the interactive and collaborative visualization of data from molecules and proteins to spectra and experimental data. We then review how these visualizations can be scripted for immersive educational activities and real-life collaborative research. We also discuss the benefits of the social networking affordances of Second Life for both chemists and chemistry students.

We report on the implementation of the Spectral Game, a web-based game where players try to match molecules to various forms of interactive spectra including 1D/2D NMR, Mass Spectrometry and Infrared spectra. Each correct selection earns the player one point and play continues until the player supplies an incorrect answer. The game is usually played using a web browser interface, although a version has been developed in the virtual 3D environment of Second Life. Spectra uploaded as Open Data to ChemSpider in JCAMP-DX format are used for the problem sets together with structures extracted from the website. The spectra are …
Visualizing Atomic Orbitals Using Second Life, Andrew Lang, David C. Kobilnyk
Visualizing Atomic Orbitals Using Second Life, Andrew Lang, David C. Kobilnyk
College of Science and Engineering Faculty Research and Scholarship
We demonstrate the usefulness of Second Life as a platform for enlivening major concepts in chemistry education. These concepts include absorption spectra, selection rules, quantum numbers, and atomic orbital shapes. We have built several exhibits in Second Life which provide 3-dimensional interactivity for each of those areas: an interactive experiment showing the absorption spectrum of hydrogen, an interactive model of selection rules showing allowed and forbidden transitions for each state, a 3-dimensional grid of orbitals showing the constraints on the values of quantum numbers, and a large-scale interactive orbital display allowing the user to choose and rotate to-scale atomic orbitals …

1969 Will Rogers High School Commencement Address, Oral Roberts
Oral Roberts Speeches and Addresses
On May 29th, 1969, Oral Roberts was the commencement speaker for the 30th Graduation exercises for Will Rogers High School in Tulsa, Oklahoma. The Roberts family children attended Tulsa Public Schools. The Principal of the school, Dr. Knight, was also a good friend of the family.
Roberts shared with graduates about the importance of relationship. He notes,
"We hear a lot about the generation gap and the gap between races or the gap between lasses, and after dealing with thousand of people face to face and hand to hand and looking at the thing seriously, I believe there is no …
