The purpose of this applied dissertation was to explore how effectively a one-on-one mentoring relational support program would influence outcomes in attendance, academic achievement, and behavioral issues at an at-risk charter school in Florida. The majority of the students at the selected charter school are at-risk students, defined as such because their present level of academic achievement is significantly below that of their peers. At the selected charter school, students struggle with low attendance, low academic achievement, and a high number of behavioral infractions. This dissertation was a qualitative study of school social workers who worked with special needs adolescent youth with emotional and behavioral disabilities in a public high school. This study centered on the experiences of 10 social workers in a public high school in New Jersey. This applied dissertation will provide a deeper understanding of how high school students with nonverbal learning disabilities perceive themselves. Persons with nonverbal learning disabilities are defined primarily through performance measures with less qualitative information available. In this study, high school students identified with nonverbal learning disabilities will have the opportunity to voice their feelings about their disability.
