Self-Grading: A Commentary, Hunter C. King, Qijie (Vicky) Cai
iSALT Resources: Theories, Concepts, and Measures
The theoretical perspectives and the various ways for implementing the self-grading strategy have been extensively discussed in the literature. In this paper, we aim to synthesize pertinent information and resources to deepen our understanding around self-grading and demystify any uncertainties about this concept, if any.
Physics Comic Book: A Classroom Resource For Engaging Students, Jacob Bukkila
Physics Comic Book: A Classroom Resource For Engaging Students, Jacob Bukkila
Undergraduate Research Symposium
For most students going through school, physics can be an intimidating course. Large and complicated textbooks are daunting, the material itself can sometimes be conceptually difficult, and on top of all that, physics uses the language of math to communicate ideas. Additionally, societal expectations have turned women away from the sciences, creating an unequal distribution of gender in science occupations. For these reasons, students are often intimidated by physics. The purpose of this project is to make physics more accessible to every student, especially women, through the use of a comic book. Comic books provide a multitude of advantages for …

Impact Of Community-Based Creative Arts Programs On Youth, Kasey Jacques, John Seipel, Nyairah Abdullah, Trelijah Miller
Undergraduate Research Symposium
The purpose of our study was to reflect on how community-based cultural arts programs have had an impact on academic achievement, academic performance, and self-esteem among youth, aged 13 to 24 years old. Community-based creative arts offer a medium through which youth direct their energy toward achieving positive social, emotional, and academic outcomes (Wright, John, Alaggia, & Sheel, 2006). Our study took an approach known as “Positive Youth Development (PYD).” According to Ersing (2009, page 27), “(PYD) is a promising approach that rejects labeling young people as ‘at risk’ for a host of social, emotional, and behavioral problems and, instead, …

Impact Of Coaching Feedback On Cultural Competency Of Undergraduate Students At Msu, Mankato, Jordan Hassemer, Arinn Disalvo
Education Presentations at National and International Conferences
Our research question was "how does the timing of coaching feedback have an impact on cultural competency of undergraduates?" Cultural competency (the capability to understand and adapt behavior to cultural differences and commonalities, Hammer & Bennett, 2010) is beyond knowledge and understanding (cognitive activities). It involves reflection, critical thinking, and adaptation of behavior. Other investigators have noted that support and encouragement of critical thinking played an integral role in participant growth. Pederson (2009) promoted the importance of guided activities, reflection, recognizing and using teachable moments, and facilitation of conversations and debate about issues of race, culture, society, and values. Their …

Community In The Telepresence Classroom, Jason A. Kaufman, G. David Mcnay
Educational Leadership Department Publications
We have been conducting surveys of our telepresence students at MSU since the spring of 2014. Initially (with our colleague Candace Raskin), we focused on students in our Educational Leadership Department; we subsequently extended our study to students in telepresence courses across campus. Our goal throughout has been to better understand how students experience telepresence courses and how we might improve the way in which we teach them. Here, we describe our findings thus far and offer a few recommendations for improving the student experience in telepresence courses.

Computer Mediated Communication And Adult Learners: A Case Study Of Messages Using The Hyperpersonal Framework, Linda B. Dickmeyer, Ronda Knox
Computer Mediated Communication And Adult Learners: A Case Study Of Messages Using The Hyperpersonal Framework, Linda B. Dickmeyer, Ronda Knox
Speaker & Gavel
There is an increasing amount of research examining the role of computer-mediated communication (CMC) in a variety of educational settings. Online courses are of particular interest to adult learners. In addition, we notice that communication research rarely studies adult learners, who provide increasing numbers in our face-to-face and computer-mediated classrooms. The purpose of this research is to investigate the interaction that occurs between adult learners in an online course. Specifically, the hyperpersonal framework is used as a lens to examine how participants communicate with one another. The hyperpersonal framework components (receiver, sender, channel, and feedback) were evident through a qualitative …

The Small-College Communication Program: An Assessment Of Communication Program Organization And Curricula At Private Liberal Arts Colleges In The Midwest And South, Brian R. Mcgee, Deborah Socha Mcgee
Speaker & Gavel
The study investigates selected features of communication degree programs at small, private liberal arts colleges in the Midwest and South. Topics covered include how communication programs at such colleges are organized at the departmental level, what courses are most commonly offered in small-college communication programs, and what course enrollment limits are typical for such programs. Our findings suggest that communication programs are now commonly found at such institutions, with most housed in academic units that refer to communication in the unit name. Beyond relatively widespread commitments to restricting course enrollments, these programs are generally marked by great diversity in their …
An Examination Of Students Perceptions Of "Learning" In A Study Abroad Experience And Recommendations For Effective Pedagogy, Scott Dickmeyer, Ronda Knox
An Examination Of Students Perceptions Of "Learning" In A Study Abroad Experience And Recommendations For Effective Pedagogy, Scott Dickmeyer, Ronda Knox
Speaker & Gavel
Undergraduate study abroad programs are becoming more popular in our increasingly global society. Students consider the opportunity to study abroad to be a personally impacting educational experience. This study provided empirical data demonstrating that study abroad experiences are unique as students learn in ways that differ from the tradition classroom. Additionally, the results indicate that students struggle with the interdependent terms study and abroad. The experience of living abroad is exceptionally educational as well deeply personal and impacting. However, traditional classroom study practices (reading textbooks, taking exams, etc.) impose obstacles for the experiential learning (living in another culture). As such, …
Finding An Acceptable Definition Of "Original" Work In Platform Speeches: A Study Of Community College Coaches, Crystal Lane Swift, Gary Rybold
Finding An Acceptable Definition Of "Original" Work In Platform Speeches: A Study Of Community College Coaches, Crystal Lane Swift, Gary Rybold
Speaker & Gavel
The quantitative analysis of this paper was undertaken to discover coach definitions of "original work" in platform speaking in the community college forensics competition. A survey was conducted to determine if there was any consistency to coaching practices when considering a recent rule change requiring that all platform speeches be the original work of the student. Although the literature review indicates that academia has established guidelines for plagiarism and unattributed collaboration, no such consistent definition was found among the coaches surveyed. The discussion of the results revolves around the conclusion that coaches are consistent in their own practices but those …
Revisiting Cicero In Higher Education Cultivating Citizenship Skills Through Collegiate Debate Programs, Annette Holba
Revisiting Cicero In Higher Education Cultivating Citizenship Skills Through Collegiate Debate Programs, Annette Holba
Speaker & Gavel
Higher education is in the midst of a paradigm shift from the Professing Paradigm to the Learning Paradigm approach in pedagogical strategies. The Learning Paradigm privileges a co-producing of learning between the student and the teacher. This essay argues that collegiate debate programs can be one example of the Learning Paradigm engagement that also helps to cultivate the Greek and Roman ideal of citizenship in students. Ciceronian rhetorical theory explains how citizenship skills are developed through collegiate debate practices.

There are a variety of lesson plan forms. Different kinds of lessons call for different kinds of lesson plan formats. This article describes what I believed to be the basic elements necessary to effectively teach a schema-building lesson. A schema (plural is schemata) is an organized body of knowledge in our head. If long term memory were a file cabinet, schemata would be the individual file folders.

Hush... : The Dangers Of Silence In Academic Libraries, Jessica Schomberg, Kirsti Cole
Library Services Publications
This article critiques the idea that civility rhetoric decreases workplace bullying or discrimination. We use Critical Discourse Analysis (CDA) to do a rhetorical analysis of a campus-wide civility campaign in contrast with literature about civility in libraries. To combat discrimination and bullying, we need to be attentive to systemic power dynamics and to rhetoric designed to enforce compliance and conformity. We conclude with recommendations about how to raise our voices instead of silencing our peers.

The Trifecta Approach And More: Student Perspectives On Strategies For Successful Online Lectures, Laura Jacobi
Communication Studies Department Publications
The purpose of this study was to explore the perspectives of students regarding what was effective about the way in which the online lectures were structured in an upper level online organizational communication course. Student evaluations from 27 students were used, with questions focused upon the structure of lectures in the online course as compared to other online courses and to traditional classrooms. Qualitative analyses reveal the use of the trifecta approach, the use of audio voice-overs with PowerPoint slides, the concise nature of lectures, the ability to review them, and the use of key points as significant to student …
