Christian School Discipline: A Collaborative Approach To Improving Student Behavior, Robert A. Fox, Collen Terry, Theresa A. Fox

A Catholic elementary school systematically developed a comprehensive discipline program with input from the administrator, teachers, students, parents, and other members of the parish community. Developed around the themes of respect, spirituality, and responsibility, the program was systematically evaluated over the first year of a three-year period of implementation. Survey results of parents, teachers, and students indicate positive perceptions of the project by aU three groups.

Prospective Minority Students' Perceptions Of Application Packets For Professional Psychology Programs: A Qualitative Study, Joseph Ponterotto, Alan W. Burkard, Roland Yoshida, Anthony A. Cancelli, Giovanni Mendez, Lynn Wasilewski, Lynn Sussman

This article reports the results of a qualitative study designed to determine issues salient in Black and Hispanic American students' review and evaluation of program-application packets in professional psychology. The study served as an extension to the Yoshida et al. (1989) quantitative investigation. Students interested in pursuing doctoral studies in counseling or school psychology (N = 22) served as the sample. The qualitative methodology incorporated a think-aloud procedure and semistructured interviews. A theme analysis of transcribed interviews identified both major and minor themes central to participants' evaluation of the packets. In 1984, researchers determined that the readability of state drivers' manuals exceeded the average literacy levels in the United States. Because text complexity threatened the ability of license applicants and practicing drivers to understand the information presented in the manuals, a potential safety risk was indicated. This study analyzes recent editions of the manuals using readability formulas and formal text presentation ratings. It was found that the average difficulty of the drivers' manuals was reduced by more than one grade level and that the 1994 manuals are clearly superior to their earlier versions, but that, in the interest of highway …

Parenting Among Mothers With Young Children In Mexico And The United States, Pedro Solís-Cámara, Robert A. Fox

Parenting practices and developmental expectations were examined in a sample of 138 mothers with very young children from Mexico and the United States. Mothers from both countries had completed 12 years of formal education and were similar in terms of socioeconomic and marital status. The age and sex of the focus children were similar in both samples. The Parent Behavior Checklist (PBC), a 100-item rating scale that measures parents' developmental expectations and their discipline and nurturing practices, was used. Mothers in Mexico and the United States did not differ significantly in their developmental expectations or parenting practices. All mothers adapted …
