Ii International Colloquium On Languages, Cultures, Identity, In School And Society, International Colloquium
Proceedings of the International Colloquium on Languages, Cultures, Identity in School and Society
The influx of immigrants in countries worldwide, coupled with the challenges associated to the schooling of their children in host countries' schools, makes it more necessary than ever to broaden our knowledge of the linguistic, ethnic, and cultural realities derived from this phenomenon. This is the rationale for the present Colloquium, which revolves around the following topics:
- Individual, school, and societal bilingualism/multilingualism-related issues
- Multi/Transculturalism-related issues in families, schools, and society
- Impact of bi/multilingualism on individuals' and societies' language, culture, and identity
- Impact of multi/transculturalism on individuals' and societies' language, culture, and identity
- Language ideologies, policies, and practices
- Promotion, maintenance, and …

Best-Subset Selection Criteria For Multiple Linear Regression, Gordon P. Brooks, Porsche Ruengvirayudh
Best-Subset Selection Criteria For Multiple Linear Regression, Gordon P. Brooks, Porsche Ruengvirayudh
Grant Evaluation & Statistical Support
This study presents comparisons of subset selection criteria used to help determine the "best" regression model in multiple linear regression. No such criteria can replace a researcher's knowledge of theory to help choose useful models, but such criteria may help in exploratory research. Relationships among variables can be more complicated than expected and may require adjustment to theory based on empirical models. Knowing how well each subset selection method performs can be useful in such cases. Monte Carlo simulations were performed to compare a number of well-known criteria (e.g., AIC, BIC, PRESS, adjusted R2 ) to some less well-known …

Comparing Stepwise Regression Models To The Best-Subsets Models, Or, The Art Of Stepwise, Pornchanok Ruengvirayudh, Gordon P. Brooks
Grant Evaluation & Statistical Support
Stepwise regression methods are widely recognized as undesirable for explanatory purposes. As exploratory methods, however, they may provide efficient means for researchers to examine multiple models for further investigation. This study used Monte Carlo methods to examine the use of forward and backward regression without stopping criteria (i.e., with customized stepping criteria) in order to create all possible stepwise models (i.e., from one predictor to the fully specified model). Using these stepwise methods without stopping criteria often produced the same models as best-subset regression when there was little multicollinearity. Agreement was still good, but it declined, as multicollinearity became stronger. …

Textbook-Bundled Metacognitive Tools: A Study Of Learnsmart’S Efficacy In General Chemistry, Vandana Thadani, Nicole C. Bouvier-Brown

College textbook publishers increasingly bundle sophisticated technology-based study tools with their texts. These tools appear promising, but empirical work on their efficacy is needed. We examined whether LearnSmart, a study tool bundled with McGraw-Hill’s textbook Chemistry (Chang & Goldsby, 2013), improved learning in an undergraduate general chemistry course. Content-knowledge gains of those students who used LearnSmart, those who did not use it, and those who used it with scaffolding questions that supported use of the tool’s metacognitive features were compared. The metacognitive scaffolding questions appeared to help students use LearnSmart more effectively than did using LearnSmart by itself, which did …

Engineering education in the 21st century faces multiple obstacles including limited accessibility of course resources due, in part, to the costs associated with acquiring and maintaining equipment and staffing laboratories. Another continuing challenge is the low level of participation of women and other groups historically underrepresented in STEM disciplines. As a partial remedy for these issues, we established a Virtual Engineering Sciences Learning Lab (VESLL) that provides interactive objects and learning activities, multimedia displays, and instant feedback procedures in a virtual environment to guide students through a series of key quantitative skills and concepts. Developed in the online virtual world …
Perceived Culpability In Critical Multicultural Education: Understanding And Responding To Race Informed Guilt And Shame To Further Learning Outcomes Among White American College Students, Fernando Estrada
Education Faculty Works
In this investigation we explored among a U.S. sample of White college students the effect of perceived race-informed culpability--conceptualized as the self-conscious emotions known as White guilt and shame--on two critical multicultural education outcomes: modern prejudicial attitudes and demonstrated anti-racist knowledge. Interaction effects by participants' racial identity were also examined. Moderated hierarchical linear regression showed that the tendency to experience White guilt as well as White shame explained a significant portion of the variability in racist attitudes. For knowledge, only guilt had an effect. No interaction effects were observed. Limitations are discussed followed by implications for teaching and learning with …

This article presents the results of a study examining a 6-month project funded by the U.S. Department of Education that focused on enhancing teacher learning and instructional practices in transitional kindergarten (TK) in a large urban California school district. The project integrated and adapted the Doing What Works (2012) dialogic reading practices1 into ongoing professional development for 28 TK teachers working in classrooms with high percentages of 4- and 5-year-old dual language learners (DLLs). We employed a quasi-experimental design that used a comparison group to examine how teaching practices changed both with and without the project’s coaching support. Data from …
