Teachers are in a constant cycle of data collection to guide instruction and increase student achievement; however, students are not always involved in the data collection or discussion of their own learning data. The purpose of this correlational study was to explore the relationship between students’ tracking of their own learning data and their academic achievement in fifth-grade mathematics as measured by the aimswebPlus assessment. A convenience sample of 154 students from a middle school in a southern Tennessee school district participated in the study using archival data. The purpose of this applied study was to solve the problem of teacher retention for a rural middle school in Southwestern Virginia and to design training strategies to address the problem. A rural middle school in Southwestern Virginia is struggling to retain teachers. The research question for this study was: How can teacher retention at a rural middle school in Southwestern Virginia be improved. Interviews with former teachers of the rural middle school were conducted specifically to determine why these individuals left. Little research exists in the attitudes and efficacy of middle school math teachers and science teachers toward Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math (STEM) education. STEM education refers to an integrated approach to teaching math and science that incorporates problem solving, problem-based learning, and discovery rather than teaching these disciplines in isolation. Teachers’ efficacy and beliefs, outcome expectancy beliefs, and the use of STEM instructional strategies may vary by discipline. Each of these aspects are important in designing professional learning to meet the teachers’ needs as well as their capacity to implement integrated, problem-based learning into the classroom.
