This phenomenographic research explores how students perceive one-on-one (teacher-student) writing conferences. At least twice a year, I sit with my 9th-grade English students to discuss their writing. Together, we go over their last writing assignment. I coach them to make their writing better while pointing out positive elements of their writing. I check for understanding by having the students verbally repeat a summary of their conference. While I feel connected to the students and their writing by conferring, I have rarely considered what they thought about the conference. The complexities of Open Access can result in uninformed high-stakes decision-making for researchers on the cusp of entering the publishing world. Graduate students need to understand how Open Access influences their research practices, and how to negotiate rights in a complex publishing ecosystem. Here we describe a collaboration between research librarians and writing center professionals that integrates Open Access education into a workshop series on graduate student writing. Specifically, we co-designed a presentation that bridged manuscript preparation (an obvious publication step) with the less-obvious issues surrounding Open Access.

Amid the shift to virtual learning during the COVID-19 pandemic, educators across disciplines were faced with developing new strategies for active learning. This article discusses findings from a case study of using Google Earth for virtual field trips and projects in an undergraduate Geography of North America course, assessing the process of incorporating Google Earth and student perspectives on their engagement with this technology. With broader applications to secondary and post-secondary education contexts, findings suggest increased student engagement and an appreciation for the opportunity to work with a geospatial technology mapping platform without needing prior coding, software, or mapping experience.

The purpose of this qualitative study was to analyze if sketchnoting was a useful tool that students could use to deepen their understanding of concepts learned in ELA. This paper sought to identify and compare disciplinary emphases in data science curricula across South Africa’s 26 public universities using a website scoping review method. The key findings reveal that only 12 of the 26 universities offer data science programmes that are publicly accessible on their websites. Of those 12, only 5 offer data science at the undergraduate level, and these undergraduate programmes are objectified (entirely leaning) to the science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) disciplines.
