Partnerships between universities and community organizations contribute to sustainable community development by creating networks of resources that may not otherwise exist among university faculty, students and community members. Service learning serves as a vessel for connecting and strengthening these resources; however, barriers within universities limit effective practice. University faculty members often cite time constraints, coordination challenges, and lack of support as deterrents to the incorporation of service learning projects in their courses. Rapid Response Team On Civil Discourse: Assessing Extension's Capacity To Respond, Rachel Welborn

Throughout the early months of 2016, news stories of racial unrest frequented the media outlets. In response, the Extension Committee on Organization and Policy (ECOP) established the first Rapid Response Team, giving a charge to explore civil discourse around race relations. This pilot response to an emerging need involved a scan of the Cooperative Extension System's resources and expertise while assembling a competency matrix and developing next step recommendations to help move CES forward in advancing civil discourse.
