This study examines several cases of Chinese VIP-TOEFL-prep speaking teachers (how do they teach and what do they use in class). This study also seeks to elicit those teachers’ perceptions of some communicative speaking tasks, which are one-on-one interviews, paired/group discussion, computer as interlocutor. Paired/group discussion and presentation in the virtual environment were used in interviews and questionnaires as additional communicative speaking tasks. The purpose of this qualitative phenomenological study was to examine superintendent instructional leadership in the context of the Iowa Teacher Leadership and Compensation System (TLCS). The study included interviews of 15 Iowa superintendents who were involved in the application and initial implementation of the Iowa TLCS in their districts. Interviews were designed to collect superintendents’ perceptions related to three areas of their instructional leadership practice: (1) perceived opportunities of TLCS; (2) perceived challenges of TLCS; and (3) perceived influence of TLCS implementation on superintendents’ role as instructional leaders. The study examines and analyzes intercultural awareness students have regarding race, diversity, and life, their own and others’. This dissertation responds to two aspects of the homesickness literature: its characterization as a mental health concern, and its lack of empirical attention in the United States. This institution-specific credential completion study examined student demographic, academic, and financial characteristics and their relationship to on-time credential completion. Working with institutional data from a rural-serving medium size, public community college in Iowa, a cohort of first-time-in-college students were analyzed for the traditional measurement of on-time completion based on the type of program the student enrolled in their first term. Several national and international studies have indicated that there is an achievement gap between student literary reading and student informational reading, with the gap favoring literary reading. One plausible explanation for this gap is that reading informational text has been neglected in early grades in the U.S. (Dreher, 2003; Kletzien & Dreher, 2004; Moss, 2008; Moss & Newton, 2002). Even more concerning, students from low-SES families seem to be struggling more with informational text than their affluent peers, since children in low-SES schools are historically reported to have fewer opportunities to develop their informational text reading skills compared to students in affluent schools (Duke, 2000b). In recent years, with the implementation of Common Core State Standards, more emphasis has been placed on students’ ability to comprehend and write informational text. However research gaps exist in the domain of opportunity to learn informational text and literary text in schools with different SES.

comprehension. A mixed-methods explanatory research design was used to identify whether

animated videos or context videos facilitated better listening comprehension. Fifty-seven ESL undergraduate/graduate students were recruited from an academic speaking and pronunciation course offered at Iowa State University.
