Experiencing An Old-Growth Forest: An Immersive Nature And Art Workshop For Environmental Educators, Valerie Ozaksut

School of Education and Leadership Student Capstone Projects

Environmental education seeks to develop an engaged and environmentally literate citizenry for a more equitable and sustainable future (NAAEE). Environmental art education is an interdisciplinary field which utilizes environmental education and art education practices. Addressing environmental issues through artmaking can expand learner understandings and emotional connections to the natural world, fostering environmental literacy. Exploring concepts from environmental education and art education, this capstone project uses the sense of wonder (Carson, 1956), the live creature (Dewey, 1934) and aesthetic empathy (Haskell, 2018) as a framework for study. This professional development workshop for environmental educators is designed to introduce environmental art education …

Culturally Relevant Pedagogy In The Online Elementary Classroom, Kelsey Iverson

School of Education and Leadership Student Capstone Projects

Culturally relevant pedagogy (CRP) is a critical component of ensuring equity and contributes to creating a safe, nurturing, and supportive learning environment for all students (Ladson-Billings, 1995). With the increase of students of color entering the online learning sphere (U.S. Department of Education, 2021), it is critical that teachers are equipped with knowledge of best practices in CRP practices. Additionally, with the increase in creation of elementary online learning programs throughout the country, it is important that teachers are equipped with knowledge of best practices for online teaching and learning. The research question addressed in this capstone project is: How …

Culturally Responsive Teaching In Science Classrooms, Julia Bender Jul 2021

Culturally Responsive Teaching In Science Classrooms, Julia Bender

School of Education and Leadership Student Capstone Projects

Our educational system is producing a generation of dependent learners. Whether because of a lack of confidence or a lack of skills, these scholars often don’t know where to start when tackling complex problems. Inequitable educational experiences have caused these challenges to disproportionately impact students of color. Education scholars, including Geneva Gay, Gloria Ladson-Billings, and Zaretta Hammond, have completed extensive research on how culturally responsive teaching can be used as a strategy to address these inequities. This project takes on a specific focus and works to address the following question: How can science teachers use culturally responsive teaching to help …

Integrating Culturally Relevant Teaching Strategies: Professional Development For Elementary Classroom Teachers, Anne Taylor Jul 2020

Integrating Culturally Relevant Teaching Strategies: Professional Development For Elementary Classroom Teachers, Anne Taylor

School of Education and Leadership Student Capstone Projects

Research has determined that culturally responsive teaching is a powerful tool that improves student achievement while providing more equitable educational opportunities for all students (Au, 2009; Banks, 2006; Gay, 2000; Hammond, 2015; Ladson-Billings, 2009). Schools that engage in CRT are able to build bridges of meaning between home and school experiences and between academics and students' cultural realities. However, evidence also suggests that while teachers may have knowledge of multicultural education, many do not display the characteristics needed to fully apply and sustain culturally responsive pedagogical practices. The professional development and PLC supports created for this project are built upon …

Teaching English Rhythm: The Importance Of Rhythm And Strategies To Effectively Incorporate Rhythm Practice Within Content Lessons, Angela L. Reinard Haasch

School of Education and Leadership Student Capstone Theses and Dissertations

The research question addressed in this project was how can professional development (PD) materials be developed to educate adult education (AE) English as a second language (ESL) teachers about English rhythm and to provide effective strategies to incorporate rhythm throughout content lessons? The motivating factor for this capstone was an observation of teachers’ insecurities regarding pronunciation pedagogy of suprasegmental features, specifically rhythm, a lack of focus on rhythm in ESL classrooms, and a need for PD surrounding teaching pronunciation. The research defines English rhythm, the way it differs from the rhythm of other languages, and its affect on intelligibility. Furthermore, …
